Door hinges coming away from frame

I have door hinges coming away from frame on three doors. I can't shut the doors.

I can't do diy myself. What is the best way to get the doors fixed? I mean, what sort of professional do I need and where could I find them.

It's like the frames are - okay don't know the word to describe it but it's like they have dried out and are less able to keep screws in without the wood just sort of flaking or giving way. House is @ 100 years old.

I need to get the house re-wired. Should I wait for then and get a bit job done or is it a little job?

Utterly clueless, grateful for help.

post some photos please. There are a couple of probable sources.

How long have the doors been fitted, and when did this fault first occur?

Was it soon after the doors had been painted?

You are probably going to need a carpenter, so ask around for personal recommendations from people you know and trust. an experienced, wrinkly old feller will be suitable. A handyman or general builder will not be as expert. An electrician is unsuitable.

Advertising websites where the traders pay to be listed are not a good source, even if they are disguised as recommendation sites.

Carpenter could help. You may need longer screws though. Maybe post some pictures. I’ll ask my dad as he’s a very skilled carpenter. Only works for us these days much to disgust of my mother.

Post a photo of the hinges so we can see but sounds like you just need an odd job person to fix that. An electrician unlikely to want to get involved - unless youre lucky.

A temporary fix would be to fill the holes with matchsticks and wood glue, wait until dry, cut to length then rescrew the hinges with longer screws.

It's a bodge job, but should last until you replace the frame. (I've had to do the same)

Thank you for all the responses. About to shoot out to buy uniform but will post pics when I get back.

Frames are at least thirty years old (we've lived here for twenty five), and I think they could be contemporary with the house, which is the Edwardian back to back brick type. We found that someone who lived here died at the battle of the Somme anyway, which helps date it. Frames were painted @ six or seven years ago. Thinking about it, I think the doors may be newer than the frames, as I can see marks on the frames where hinges may previously been located, and the doors are solid and heavy. If the doors had been replaced, it would have been around thirty years ago.

I just thought that if it was a big job like replacing frames, I could have it done at the same time as all the upheaval of the rewiring.

I'll ask around for a carpenter, but I'm pretty isolated so it's difficult for me to know who to ask. I'm grateful for the advice, though, and I'll stay away from the 'rate my builder' type sites. I'll start asking around.

Really appreciate the help.

rehanging the doors is not a big job. An experienced wrinkly carpenter will have done literally thousands and will know the causes. Unless the house is a grand one with thick, heavy doors, it will not even be very arduous. A saw, a plane, a drill, a screwdriver... and knowing how to use them.

If you find one good tradesman (a plumber, a roofer, a carpenter) they will tend to know other locals. Good tradesmen will not recommend a bodger, as it hurts their reputation. For some reason, parish magazines are a good source of small-ads, especially for someone who is local and has been in business for a number of years.

p.s.

measure the thickness of the doors (accurately) please. They will be either 35mm or 44mm. How many floors does your house have (including loft rooms, if any)
