Preston vs York

We have been seriously thinking about moving to Preston, but now I'm having doubts. On the plus side it has good transport links to Manchester, Lake District etc. But the town itself is horrible. Been looking at Penwortham and Fulwood areas. Fulwood seems to have plenty of age suitable activities and is near the hospital. We're retired but active, so schools/commuting aren't a consideration. Plenty of affordable property. But I am worried about how safe it is, not planning to go out at night, but for dog walking.

Also wondering about North Yorkshire/York, mainly because it features in some "best place to live" lists and does not have any negative associations. I have only been to York once, many years ago. Have a maximum of 400,000 so that rules out anywhere within commuting distance of London.

I am Confused at the praise for Fullwood over and above many of the places suggested, it's an ok suburb, the traffic is hell, the hospital layout and design dire, very relieved we decided not to move there.

Yes very friendly compared to the SE but all/nearly all of Lancashire is Confused

Preston College is also in Fulwood

You can't park your car in fulwood. People damage cars because it's outside their house although they don't have a drive and people are fully in their rights to park their

I would look at Lancaster, Carnforth, Milnthorpe, Kirkby Lonsdale or Kendal areas if you want North West.

It sounds as though you may already in the NW but for me the difference in rainfall east to west is significant. I can't comment on York but be careful of big tourist areas...

I live in Hutton, just South of the river near Penwortham. I have open fields to four sides, my DC attend outstanding local secondary schools and I can drive into the city in ten minutes, be on the coast in less than half an hour and in Manchester or the Lakes in an hour. The city centre has lost its way and shopping is nothing special, and personally I don't see the attraction of Fulwood, it's heaving with hospital traffic.
Hutton, Longton, New Longton all lovely. HIgher Penwortham too, and lots of investment and plans for this area with the new bypass.

Sorry but as a born and bred local I'd say south Ribble over fulwood every time. Fulwood has no centre or heart to me. Just a suburb.

Penwortham has a thriving little centre with lots of cafes and bars which will only get better for locals once the bypass is finished.

@HJWT TBF Ingol has improved a LOT, I obviously wouldn't pick it as anywhere out the whole city to live but I feel absolutely safe as a single woman around there. It varies so much street by street too

blindedbytiredness · 21/08/2019 18:39

Oh god yes the traffic in Fulwood is horrendous (I commute from lytham to Fulwood once a week) the best thing about Fulwood is the Greggs I get my lunch at Grin

York property is expensive but a good investment, although look online for flood risk areas. Somewhere off Bishopthorpe Road near Rowntree Park would be my choice.. Too many sheep for good off lead dog walking in the north west (and the Dales). Maybe go to either coast.. fabulous beach, cliff and forest walks around Scarborough. Depends where the rest of your family are, though..
