Timber Frame Self Build Homes

Anybody got any experience with timber framed houses?

DH and I are tentatively wondering whether a self build might be possible in a few years time and a few of his colleagues have raved about the timber frame option that they've gone for.

Any general advice and wisdom about buying land/self builds also very welcome! Smile

We're so early in the contemplation stage that we're just looking for people's recommendations and experiences either way to be honest! Smile

Yes, have experience. It’s a great, comfortable house. Depending on your experience of construction, a kit house might be an option. We had skills in house so to speak so it was a custom build.

Self build is a big, demanding ask. Consider how much involvement you want to have and how much you will buy in. Re financing, some mortgage companies are jumpy about non standard construction. One option if the project meets certain sustainability criteria is the ecology Building Society www.ecology.co.uk/mortgages/residential-mortgages/self-build/

Oh and re fire, timbers are treated and if you use proper spec they will char rather than bend or warp as steel would do.

And it’s rot re more expensive to alter! You just..... put a new frame in. The Segal method of self build is designed to be accessible to people and it’s really, really easy to change them. My source: lived in one for twenty years.
