How do I go about finding someone who will build in flat pack furniture for me?

I’ve been looking online at people who have had Ikea flat pack furniture built in. It looks great. We have high ceilings and I would like cupboards in the sitting room and wardrobe in the bedroom built in to look like this.

I have searched and cannot find anyone who does this (London). There must be somewhere! I want someone with experience, ideally with pictures I can see so I can visualise what if would look like in my flat and advise on which units to buy!

Any ideas appreciated!

Ikea will advise you on choosing the right units.

They have an assembly service you can pay for.

I’m not sure what else you need tbg?

If you're on Facebook ask on your local pages. I have a friend who's a handyman who gets a lot of requests to build flat pack stuff.

Surely the place you're buying from will have photos of the furniture built

If you are Facebook is there a local Facebook group where you can ask for recommendations?

I have found a local plumber, electrician and handyman this way. It has been an invaluable resource. These tradesmen have told me that most of their business comes from Facebook recommendations, so they don't bother paying to advertise any more.

There are loads of people who do this in London and some of them just do Ikea flat packs so they are very quick at them. Just google flat pack assembly . Or look on Facebook groups for recommendations.

Tolleshunt · 17/08/2019 10:22

I think some posters may be missing the fact you want the furniture built-in, rather than just assembled.

I guess you would be looking for a joiner/carpenter/builder, rather than a handyman. Have you tried posting the job on Rated People? I have got good people this way. There are builders round my way who employ teams with all sorts of skills. I would expect to get several quotes at least. Maybe give that a try, if you haven’t already done so?

brownjumper · 17/08/2019 10:23

Or just do it yourself! I've built loads of flat pack furniture, including a cabin bed which said it would take to people to build and tiny old me did it by myself.

TapasForTwo · 17/08/2019 10:28

Tolleshunt the handyman we had in recently happened to be a joiner as well. If you state on Facebook exactly what you are looking for you should get recommendations for the right person.

That wasn't very helpful brownjumper Hmm

Tolleshunt · 17/08/2019 10:34

I get that some people may double up, for sure, Tapas.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 17/08/2019 10:47

I'd be asking Ikea to install it to be honest.

When asking for a recommendation on Facebook be sure to ask for personal recommendations only. Otherwise, people just plug their hubby/brother in law/dad etc.

Yes! K could build it myself, but I want it fitted, the units up to the ceiling and the odd shapes filled in.

No Facebook site unfortunately. I live in central London in a low residential area and there’s no such thing!

I’ve looked on Rated etc. I can’t find anyone who says they do what I want. The couple I enquired said it would be better to have it built from scratch and estimated £17,000.

The one I saw in a magazine a couple of years ago, Ikea built to look like fitted, was £2000!

I don’t want it installed, I can do that.

I want it built in!

Where about roughly in London are you? I’m in an inner suburb of SW London, and had some work done where one of the things the builder did was take out and then reinstal the same fitted wardrobes. Other builders wanted to rebuild the carcass at least. The builder had a team with all sorts of skilled tradesmen, tilers, plasterers, carpenters, etc. It was four years ago, but i could give you his number if you are on this side of London.

I used Screwdriver a few years ago The guy who came round was brilliant.

Sorry just saw you want built in, not just flat pack

Grumpyunleashed · 17/08/2019 12:09

I am not really clear about exactly what you want fitted, however for these purposes I assume it does not matter.
Simply photo and then measure the spaces in all dimensions so odd angles can be recreated in 3D. Then find suppliers who can show stuff on screen having recreated your spaces.
If you are buying flat pack stuff it is relatively simple to fit and should come with brackets to hold it to the wall.
I have done this sort of work myself with Ikea gear despite being a firm believer that the ‘D’ in DIY stands for decimate, devastate and destroy.
If you lack the confidence then as opposed to a builder there are and I quote “Handy Husband” type companies who do this type of work or handyman / handy person services. It could be up their street.
Sorry but I cannot recommend etc.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

Tolleshunt I’m SE1, I’d appreciated the number if it’s an area he covers.

Grumpyunleashed I have built many a flat pack including a kitchen, but what I want is different. I want it built in complete instead of paying for custom built.

AwkwardPaws27 Yes, that’s the sort of thing, thank you.
