Extending and rewiring property

Hello.

We (fingers crossed 🤞) have just bought a major project house to become our family home.

We would like to double height extend to the side and single story to the rear (subject to planning, I think, however I think our space/plans means PD should be on our side) ... that's not the issue thought. The house needs rewiring how does this work if you're planning to extend? Also the kitchen and dining room will no longer exist once the extension is build as we want a larger kitchen family dining living space so how does it work- as all new sockets etc will be needed for a new kitchen once it's been reconfigured.

Thanks for all the advice

We had similar, although a full re-wire wasn't required, the electrics had to be changed because of the extension. We now have two consumer units - one for the old bit of the house and one for the new. It's a double story extension with a kitchen so a lot of sockets. Having an extra consumer unit works fine.
Rewiring is a very messy and invasive job, so I would imagine the electrician would be working on the chasing out etc while the building work is underway. For us, having an extra consumer unit was the least invasive way of doing the wiring, but, as I say, our wiring was okay, we just needed a lot more capacity.

We extended our kitchen to a kitchen/diner/utility at the same time as renovating the rest of the house.

The electrician did the first and second fix in the 'main house' (not the kitchen) and left the right cables ready in the kitchen for the kitchen and extension with the electricity off. Then he came back for first and second fix on the kitchen and extension.

We got separate trades in for the extension so this worked OK for us. If you're having a builder do the extension, you might find he has an electrician he uses who won't want to work on someone else's work, so you will either need to get them done at the same time or get his electrician to come over first.

Do not underestimate how messy a rewire is. There is A LOT of drilling, A LOT of brick dust, floor boards up everywhere. My dad was an electrician and had some people crying during/after a rewire because they didn't realise (even though it had been explained to them). You will need to replaster and decorate (or patch it all up).
