Paying removal men to pack too - how does it work?

Adollop · 13/08/2019 06:09

If I pay extra for packing, how does that work? Do I leave everything where it is and they pack it all or do I need to help them? Or do I put everything in a big pile sou they know what to pack?

Sorry, I know this sounds stupid, I've never done it before, but am very tempted due to not being very well at the moment, but can't imagine how it works. Do they also take down bookshelves, take apart beds etc?

You leave everything where it is and provide biscuits and tea. Mine did take down (and put back up) beds/tables etc.

madmother1 · 13/08/2019 06:15

I'm doing the same too. The removal said to have everything as it is. They will come in the day before. Everything is packed in the lorry the night before, apart from a few essentials. Wardrobes and beds dismantled. We will slept on mattresses on the floor for the night. The next day, the removal company returns to do the last bit of packing.
I'm paying an extra £400 on top of the normal fee. I think, as the whole move is cost in £17k, in stamp duty, Solicitors and Estate agents fees, it's worth it. So, while I'm waiting to move, I'm not even thinking about getting boxes and taking weeks to pack.

orangeshoebox · 13/08/2019 06:17

they pack everything as it is and if they unpack as well they put everything roughly as it was. so tidy up or you will have a brand new pile of lego in the new dc bedroom Grin

if you leave out tea&biscuits they pack that as well.

you need to tell them exactly what not to take (remote thermostat for example)

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 13/08/2019 06:20

They pack everything. I put stickers on things I didn’t want them to pack.

I went through cupboards & drawers a few times to throw things away.

Adollop · 13/08/2019 06:21

Omg this is so tempting. It was a quote from anyvan, hoping they would really do all that. They supply boxes too? Would they pack up all my crockery?? Supply the paper/ bubble wrap etc?

OP posts:
GotToGoMyOwnWay · 13/08/2019 06:25

In my experience- everything

Put a sticker on the kettle as they will pack that also!

One word of advice- put tea, milk, coffee, few mugs & kettle, cleaning things in a separate box so you can take to new house yourself otherwise you’ll be searching through boxes looking for things!

GailTheFish · 13/08/2019 06:27

Yes ours provided everything needed for packing - different types of boxes, bubble wrap etc. I just packed a bag with things I didn’t want them to pack (a couple of v fragile items, jewellery and my underwear drawer!) and they did the rest, was amazing.

Exitstrategist · 13/08/2019 06:28

Quick question- how much have you been quoted in total for packing and moving? I need to budget! Thanks

user1474894224 · 13/08/2019 06:30

It was the best money ever spent. We had already put a load in storage when we went to market. We packed all our personal/prescious/confidential items and left it at my mum's. We had to empty our loft ourself (although Packers packed contents). On the day - which was the day before the move....they came. We anticipated having to help and direct....they told us to go out and leave them to it. We got it specified in the quote they would take down and reassemble kids bunk beds. The men were fantastic. As others have said you must specify clearly anything you want left eg. Hoover, cleaning stuff, window lock keys etc Also if you can stay out the house the night before the move it's easier. It was best money ever spent.

orangeshoebox · 13/08/2019 06:30

yep they provide anything.
in our case they used plastic crates.
they packed and loaded the lorry in one day, arrived at new house a couple of days later (long distance) and unloaded and unpacked.
it was almost stress free (apart from having to get the remote thermostat back to the new owners of the old house)

Phillipa12 · 13/08/2019 06:32

Yep everything and they supply all the bubble wrap. Mine just told me to leave essentials for the next day on our bed and kitchen essentials on the chopping board, they are true miracle workers. They also put back together beds and put clothes in wardrobes and all boxes were clearly labelled and left in the correct rooms. Will never move again without a packing service, i just make sure i declutter beforehand!

user1474894224 · 13/08/2019 06:33

....fyi....I wanted a local removal firm (because I like to support local business)...but due to the short notice of dates in the end we had to go with Pickfords and they were so accomodating and excellent service. Definitely get a few quotes... because you don't want to hold an entire chain up just because you can't get a remover on the same day as everyone else.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 13/08/2019 06:34

I also think is the best money that we spent! That & having cleaning company at new house. (I’m disabled so couldn’t do a big clean myself).

Adollop · 13/08/2019 06:34

It's only a little move, well, not many items (tiny 2 bed rented property) and distance is 200 miles approx. They quoted £519 for the move and £649 to include packing. I've attached a screenshot of the quote email received.

God. That is cheap.

Nautiloid · 13/08/2019 06:41

You leave everything, and it is utterly glorious!

DaphneduM · 13/08/2019 06:42

We've moved recently and it was the best money we've ever spent. We did de-clutter beforehand but we do have lots of stuff, including some antiques. It was that really hot week - and they just worked so hard. Packed most stuff on the Tuesday, finished final bits on Wednesday and took the van away, delivered to our new house on the Friday (day after completion - couldn't face that white-knuckle ride on completion day!). Everything delivered to the right rooms and not one breakage or loss. We left our confidential paperwork and my jewellery with family. We obviously tipped them well - and as others have said plenty of cold drinks, tea and coffee and biscuits!! Price including VAT about £1700. Moving costs so much in terms of legals, estate agents and stamp duty fees, it's not much in the great scheme of things - especially as it's your lifetime possessions they've got in their hands. That part went so smoothly - regarding the moving process legalities, although reasonably straightford I am never moving again. Five months of our lives we'll never get back!!!

Adollop · 13/08/2019 06:56

I'm just trying to work out if I have to list every single plate for the quote, as I don't want to find out that they'll only pack what I've actually written down, e.g I have to state 6 dinner plates, 6 cereal bowls ... or do they presume that's included?

OP posts:
SlightlySleepy · 13/08/2019 06:57

Do it! It made our last move so so much nicer. We carried on our day as normal while they packed, we just stuck an overnight bag in the car. Then we slept on our beds that night. The next day, they came and dismantled our beds while we went to the new house to clean. Then they put the beds back together and anything else they dismantled, and put the boxes of things in the right rooms. I didn't get them to unpack because I wanted to choose exactly where everything goes in the new house.

Don't try to help them. Anything they break, they are insured for and anything you break, you have to pay for. Also my husband decided they weren't doing it quick enough Hmm, so dismantled a plastic shed for them. Because we took it apart, we had to put it back together again, which we couldn't. And actually the lorry was big enough that it didn't even need taking apart. Don't be my husband, don't - interfere- help.

user1474894224 · 13/08/2019 07:07

They should come around to do the quote don't they? How do they know what you have otherwise? We had surveyors come and look at the house, count the wardrobes, look in the garage etc etc

Adollop · 13/08/2019 07:10

Hmm ... it's an online quote, no mention of coming round, so I'm not sure. I've emailed to ask them, so will wait to see what they say.

RushianDisney · 13/08/2019 07:13

If you can afford it it is so so worth the money. My only tip would be to pack your valuables yourself (whether £ or sentimental value) so you can find them again when unpacking. Also useful to have scissors/knife to hand on arrival to your new home to help open the boxes.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 13/08/2019 07:13

I had a local firm -they came round & saw what we had.

madmother1 · 13/08/2019 07:15

That's so cheap!! Mines £1300 with full packing. It depends on how big your family is and where. There's 4 adults in my house. Go for it!

Adollop · 13/08/2019 07:19

I think if I have to list every single plate etc it'll go up a lot though...

I think I'll have to get some more quotes. I've not got a date yet though or an exact address, just know the town.
