Floating shelf - help!

I'm hoping to install a floating shelf in my lounge. It needs to be 150cm long by 25cm deep. However, it won't be in an alcove but will just be fixed to one wall - so only one side of the shelf (rather than the usual three) will be able to have screws in, IYSWIM. Is this even possible given the size of the shelf I want, or will I need brackets?

Do you want it fixed on one of the short sides?
Can't see that working,, assuming that you want to put something ON the shelf

rosedream · 12/08/2019 17:43

You can get one made if not a standard size. It will just come with more hidden brackets along the back. Mine aren't secured at the side only the back. They are hidden inside the middle of the shelf.

Otherwise the ubiquitous ikea Lack shelf is the one for you.

newhome05 · 12/08/2019 17:58

Thanks @rosedream! How long is your shelf? I'm worried that what I want will be too long and therefore too heavy to be "floating". I really don't want brackets!

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo sorry, I don't think I explained it very well at all in my OP! The shelf will be secured at the back (and one of the sides if necessary). But the other side would not be secured.

Great! If anyone can recommend a company that can make bespoke floating shelves (and fit them) please let me know. I'm on the Kent/London border...

Ikea Lack is only supported on the back edge.
You could use their internal hidden bracket and use it to get a custom size made

PigletJohn · 12/08/2019 18:26

you don't want to put anything heavy on them, do you?

newhome05 · 12/08/2019 18:34

@PigletJohn Yes, I’m hoping to put about 40 hardback cookbooks on the shelf, plus ornaments. Will a floating shelf support that kind of weight?

Ikea lack holds loads of weight.

notso · 12/08/2019 19:38

Ikea lack or the Argos equivalent will hold around twenty five paper backs plus some random ornaments plus a plant!
I know this to be true!

minipie · 12/08/2019 20:25

Is it a brick wall you want to put it on (external wall of the house or party wall)? If not, I wouldn’t try.

PrincessSarene · 12/08/2019 20:29

This might seem a bit silly, but have you weighed the cookbooks and other stuff you want to put on the shelf? 40 hardbacks sound like they would weigh a lot!!

newhome05 · 12/08/2019 20:29

@minipie yes, it’s an external wall!

www.bespoakinteriors.co.uk/product-category/oak-floating-shelves/solid-wall-shelves/ these guys seem to offer what you want - floating shelves up to 2m long and weight capacity of up to 40kg.

JellyPeanut · 12/08/2019 21:13

I'd do this but just have extra deep secure fixings. I think weighing all the books first is a good idea though. I made my own floating shelves & have 10 fixings across the back which my friends thought excessive when I was drilling all the holes but it's bomb-proof now. I could probably sit on it Grin

We have 4ft and 6ft ones. We also made one from a wooden ladder. That was about 8ft and had 4 hidden brackets along it.

The trick is the wall brackets. We used good ones that went deep in the wall and the shelf. You could hang from the brackets they were going no where.
