Coloured kitchen cabinets - will I regret it?

DH and I really like this kitchen:
www.wickes.co.uk/kitchen/contemporary-kitchens/intelliga-range/esker-azure
It's a kind of acrylic bluey green. Not as grey as it looks in the photos.
This kitchen is intended to last us 20 years of so, should we be sensible and go for cream gloss?
I love it and so does DH but I worry it will date more quickly than a less interesting colour, and we will be stuck with something we no longer love.
Have you chosen a coloured kitchen, and did you regret it long term?

As I get older, now in my 50s, I realise that my preferences for particular colours has remained constant throughout my life. The colours themselves have gone in and out of fashion, but they’ve always made my heart sing!

I agree with this. I see it in my parents, I see it in me. Smile

Brown jumper have you had any issues with the doors warping on this kitchen?

isseywith4vampirecats · 24/02/2020 17:47

When we get round to ordering it we are going for exactly the same ones as you we were erring towards grey went to the showroom and fell in love with this we are going for gloss with Carrera marble laminate work tops

isseywith4vampirecats · 24/02/2020 17:48

only we are going with DIY kitchens as they were cheaper than Wickes

Everything dates so just go with what you like. Even if you notice it looks dated in X amount of years, you'll have liked it for longer than you would ever have liked the safe/compromise option.

Our kitchen is REALLY neutral yet still looks dated (I didn't choose it).

I guess my only tip would be to make sure that the handles you choose are standard size/fittings so you can easily and cheaply update and replace them in X amount of years if you feel the kitchen needs a refresh. Handles can make a huge difference. We can't replace ours and it annoys me so much!

We have had terrible issues with this kitchen and have been informed by our kitchen fitter that we aren't the only ones.

allinahuddle · 15/08/2020 13:04

Casper69 what issues have you had? I’m looking at this kitchen but I’ve had issues with wrapped doors peeling so thought the acrylic might avoid this.

isseywith4vampirecats · 15/08/2020 17:20

we have our cupboards in now DIY altino petrol blue acrylic wrapped and got to say very easy to keep clean and feel really sturdy

They do look lovely. Are they from DIY kitchens isseywith4vampirecats?

I’m the same. I love blue for decor and clothes. Always have, always will. Our next kitchen will definitely be blue, regardless of whether it’s in fashion.

It is a nice soft colour so I doubt it would date too quickly.

PigletJohn · 22/08/2020 11:04

I think you mean the colour of the doors (and decor panels, if any) which in standard sizes are easily changed at low cost whenever the whim takes you. You can buy them from the same factory that supplies the kitchen shops, or if you prefer, you can pay more.

Vinyl-wrap is not durable. Hard laminate is very durable. Paint is not as bad as vinyl.

The colour of the carcases I recommend a pale, neutral colour. I have used strong colours and dark wood, and they make it difficult to find things at the back, or inside base units.

allinahuddle · 22/08/2020 11:09

Thanks PigletJohn. Are lacquered doors hard wearing? I want a gloss finish but am unsure which is better - acrylic fronted or lacquered.

FenellaVelour · 22/08/2020 14:24

That’s subtle and lovely.

isseywith4vampirecats · 22/08/2020 14:33

ours are acrylic wrapped and seem very sturdy and very easy to clean and dont seem to show finger prints

PigletJohn · 22/08/2020 15:10

acrylic will scratch. think of perspex which is acrylic sheet. So a green nylon scourer would permanently scratch it.

laminate is ABS which is much harder, same as worktops are covered with. But almost always flat with square edges (post-form can be bent a little but is thinner)

lacquer is presumably quite hard but I don't know how much. They mean paint as it is unlikely to contain Laq beetle.

allinahuddle · 22/08/2020 16:08

Ah right, ok thanks PigletJohn. So many decisions.

isseywith4vampirecats · 22/08/2020 16:35

its like everything if you dont clean something right they will wear i use washing up liquid watered down in a spray bottle and a microfibre cloth to clean mine there is no way i would use something as harsh as a green scourer

Any further feedback about Betterkitchens anyone? Surprisingly few posts on them in Mumsnet but what I have heard seems to be good. I love their Nautical colour - although also a bit worried about longevity...
