Boxed in (closed coupled?) or just standard l?

Probs the most boring thread on MN. Apologies

not boxed in because it will make you sad when it goes wrong.

An ordinary close-coupled is fine.

some imports have a poor flush, especially with the low water usage. I favour established UK brands like Twyfords, Armitage, Ideal Standard.

Some have a sort of shroud round the base that makes them smooth and easy to clean. You will notice it if you look.

Prices vary a lot. High Street showrooms are the most epensive. I was surprised that QS had the best price on a hard-to-find Twyford recently.

Before buying, find out how difficult it is to get the lid off. Some with a button on the lid are very hard. if you can unscrew the button with your fingers, that's easy. If there is a concealed screw or catch, you will have forgotten how to do it when the time comes.

p.s.

Don't get a square bog unless you've got a square arse. A matching replacement seat will cost a fortune, or be unobtainable.

Ooh thanks for the tip on square seat, slight highjack of thread here sorry.

I have also been looking at toilets and there a lot of square ones. I didn't even think of a replacement seat.

Close coupled doesn't have to be boxed in - it just means that the cistern and the bowl are quite close together and part of the cistern rests on the toilet, as opposed to the old style toilet where there is a visible pipe connecting the bowl and cistern and the cistern is fully wall mounted.

I think it's personal choice. You need to think about - ease of cleaning, ease of access in case of repairs are needed, the overall design of your bathroom.

While this is difficult to test, some lavatory pans have a very shallow trap to the weir and so cannot cope with the, ahem, fuller bowel movement.

Never buy a lav that you can't do the basic repairs and maintenance yourself. Very important when it comes to the lid, which often goes sideways over time.

We’ve just got a new rimless one, a doddle to clean. Go for a soft close lid on the seat.
We’ve had several hidden cistern toilets over the past 30 years, they’ve never gone wrong, but it’s personal visual preference.
I agree go with a well known make like Twyfords or Ideal Standard. One reason we’ve replaced every bathroom in every house we’ve had, is the previous owners have ‘modernised’ with rubbish.
