Is there any point in putting the house on the market in the Autumn?

Hi all!

Would really appreciate your advice on this. I'm moving away for work and need to shift my current property. I've decided I'd rather sell it than rent it out but I'm thinking that we'll be coming up to Autumn soon and my suspicion is that houses don't sell through the Autumn/ Winter period?

My fear is that it'll sit there on sale for six months with no viewings. What would you do in my position? Is it better to hang onto it until the spring and put it on then?

Any advice greatly welcomed!

Assuming you are in the uk, I would be more worried about the brexit effect.

Honestly I think it's as much about luck as anything else. You could always put it on the market for a few weeks, and if no takers, try again in the spring.

Mine went on in school holidays. It sold in a week. Moved in to new place end of October.

katewhinesalot · 07/08/2019 10:06

Yep brexit will be having a massive effect. Try for a few weeks then take off the market and try later.

YourVagesty · 07/08/2019 10:48

I am in the UK and yes, very worried about the impacts of Brexit.

Between that and the upcoming Autumn, it's very hard to know what to do.

Thanks for the suggestions about putting it on for a few weeks - I might give that a go.

Brexit effect depends where you are. It's certainly not currently a problem where I am: property prices still going up and selling pretty quickly.

I think its just luck. We bought our house in November time, we started looking around August but didn't find "the one" for a few months. I wouldn't let it put you off, put it on for a month or so then you can always take it back off the market

YourVagesty · 07/08/2019 15:28

I'm quite heartened by everyone's suggestions, and by stories of winter sales!

Much more positive now :)

Mine has been on the market since April and not sold. I'm not sure time of year has anything to do with it

NotMyFIrstTIme · 07/08/2019 15:54

I think it all depends on how 'desirable' an area your house is in. We put our house on the market just before Xmas, and agreed a sale on Jan 6th, by which time we'd already tuned down two offers.

YourVagesty · 07/08/2019 16:20

Wow, where about's are you NotMyFirstTime? If you don't mind me asking :)

Sorry to hear that Cocomelon - really hope that you manage to get it sold soon.

we sold my MILs house last autumn - first seller pulled out and we remarketed it. Accepted a lower offer with the proviso they completed in 8 weeks. Exchanged and completed the second week of January

64sNewName · 07/08/2019 16:44

It really depends on the market in your area. Time of year where I live makes virtually no difference to sales (going by conversation with local solicitors and my own experience of selling properties).

maidenover · 07/08/2019 16:52

I’m always hearing of people trying to ‘get in by Christmas’ they must be buying in autumn 🤷‍♀️

NotMyFIrstTIme · 07/08/2019 16:53

@YourVagesty

This was in Norwich, and the xmas before last I should say so it's possible the market has slowed down since.

YourVagesty · 09/08/2019 09:05

This is all very encouraging! I'm feeling a lot more optimistic, or rather, a lot less like it's pointless to try :)

I have never not sold a house due to time of year. Wouldn’t give it a second thought.

newmobile · 09/08/2019 23:13

Sold our house in less than 4 days in October last year.
