Slippery carpeted stairs - any solutions/other options?

I live in a typical Victorian terrace house in London, with lots of stairs. I have a carpet runner on the stairs, which I think is pretty standard - not having any carpet is not really an option as it would make them even more noisy (not great when you have a dc who sounds like an elephant) and bare looking.

But, the carpet makes them slippery, particularly the edges. Dd has slipped on them a couple of times and I had a scary experience last night... it’s good quality, wool carpet.

Are there any solutions to this, other options?

Watching with interest as I was in the same situation. We had two serious falls down the stairs with carpet so I ended up ripping it out & painting the treads with F&B. They look fantastic now & are much easier to clean. Noise really isn't a problem at all. The only time it got annoying was when my teens would jump down to each landing with a thud. Normal use isn't noisy at all.
A friend of mine has had hers covered with a walnut wood finish. Not sure how they managed to clad the stairs but they look fabulous & she has 4dc in a small house.

Thanks Darkhisgory. I am surprised more people don’t have this issue. I am not clumsy and don’t run on the stairs...

I would be tempted to just paint them but they do adjoin the party wall in a terrace with not the best sound insulation, so I am not sure it would be fair on my neighbours... but maybe I need to consider this further.

Anyone else?

Is the carpet pure wool or wool mix? Pure wool is not as hard wearing as a mix and may have worn at the tread edges. It might just be time to replace the carpet.

A sisal or any other very textured carpet has more grip, might that help or do you already have that sort of carpet?

Also wearing shoes on the stars could make slipping more likely.

Bare feet have the best grip.

I'm sure I've read on other threads that sisal is not a good choice for stairs precisely because it is slippery in that setting. It also has to be glued to the subfloor and is a pain to get spills out of.

Was your DD wearing slippers and were you? The only time I’ve slipped on our carpeted stairs is when wearing slippers (I suppose they are well named).

What type of carpet - flat weave, twist, loop? I imagine flat weave is more slippery.

If you google anti slip strip carpeted stairs it brings up various options from stick on strips (doubt they’d last) to ones which need to be screwed in. None are particularly nice looking unfortunately.

Wowfudge, I think I meant sineoelse not sisal... it's like the texture of sisal but wool. Can't remember the name
