Would this be a hugely expensive mad thing to do?

We moved into our house 3 years ago. previous owners had put down Travertine stone tiles in the kitchen/diner/conservatory, it's one big open plan space. I bloody hate those tiles! They are a PITA to keep clean, they crack and chip if you so much as look at them, and they are freezing cold in winter. In our old house we had Karndean, I fantasise about having all the travertine ripped up and replaced with Karndean. Dh thinks I'm insane and it would be a huge messy and eye wateringly expensive mission, is he right?

Could you not simply screed over them and then put karndean on top? That’s what we’re doing in our tiled bathrooms because the hassle of taking tiles up and making the floor good is too much effort. We have karndean throughout downstairs, its been down nearly ten years and although it’s not pristine by any means I still think it’s the best flooring we’ve ever had and it’s survived children, pets and endless diy projects but still looks pretty good.

Ooh I hadn’t thought of that! I suppose I wasn’t sure it was possible. The only snag might be that it might make the floor come to high up for the kitchen units if you see what I mean, as in the floor might not then be flush with the bottom of the units. I could get a floor company in to advise though.

But yes, it would be expensive - a few grand.

We had LVT laid over travertine tiles in our old house, it worked fine.

No flooring lasts forever, so presumably you'll be replacing it at some stage? In which case why not just get it over with so you can enjoy your home more?
