Please help!! Bifolds and flies/wasps!!

Our kitchen has large bifolds with large sloping glass roof and the fly/wasp problem is horrendous.

They come in and go up to the tall sloping glass which they head-butt all day trying to escape. It is too high for me to reach with any kinds of fly killer. Last night I was sitting on one of the sofas underneath and a dosy wasp fell on me and stung me in 3 places!!! I am at the end of my tether with it!!!

Obviously we want to keep the doors open to let the air in as the room is so hot in the summer. What does everyone else do with a similar set up to keep the flies and wasps away?

Any help and advice much appreciated!!

Perhaps use wasp traps, so that if they do come in they are attracted to the sweet smell and get trapped. I have french windows that I open just one side of and I use one a magnetic door screen. It's attached to the frame with velcro and has magnetic snaps down the middle so you can walk through and it closes itself.

On our french doors we use one of these, works brilliantly, maybe you can get something similar for bi-folds?

Thanks for the suggestions, they are really wide bifolds 5 doors across and small kids coming in and out all day so a screen isn't really an option.

I wondered about trying some traps.

You could still screen by making up wooden frames and covering them with netting and just have one section with a magnetic screen so that people can go through that.

We have this problem with our conservatory. I was fed up with finding dead flies and wasps all over the place.

We have a two-fold solution. Sticky yellow flower traps on the windows that need replacing every so often (but they look manky as they're full of dead insects!) and I've fashioned two voile panels in to a cross-over type curtain. Put some weights in the bottom to stop them flapping around too much and it stops most of the bugs coming in.

Someone nearby has a pond and there's nothing quite like the BANG BANG sound of a huge dragonfly attempting to headbutt it's way through the glass ceiling! I rescue bees, dragonflies and damselflies but the rest are left to the sticky shit!

I have a similar issue. Fortunately not so many wasps but definitely flies. It would be such a wonderful space if it weren't for the flies in the atrium style roof! So, I'm watching this thread with interest.

I'm wondering about getting a ladder and sticking some fly tape round the windows? Does this work, has anyone tried it? Will need to change it regularly though and it will look a bit gross.

Doesn't mrs hunch suggest tying a food bag with some water and a penny somewhere in the doorway and it stops them coming in?

Toodeloo · 02/08/2019 18:08

Why not get an electric fly trap? The kind they use in commercial kitchens...?

Daphnesmate · 02/08/2019 18:14

I'm thinking about sticking something up in the roof too Milk, as far out of sight as possible, then removing it from time to time. Let me know if you try it, I would be interested to know if it works.

MilkandKids · 03/08/2019 12:09

I heard about the penny in a bag thing too but was sceptical, it's worth a try though!

Yes I also wondered about an electric fly trap but it's finding somewhere it won't look hideous.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hope you're still reading this OP. I've just become aware of a company that does probably exactly what you (and I!) need. I doubt they come cheap though.

My friends has one of those plug in killers that looks like a two bar electric fire only blue.

Her kitchen is massive and it does a grand job, if a little unsightly. She sits it in a bay window.
