Stafford - is it nice?

PercyThrower · 28/07/2019 20:14

We're thinking of moving to Stafford.

Would you?

Where abouts? We were told the southern suburbs were the best but is it easy to get to the train station? How about Rowley Park or anywhere more central?

Is there much to do? Are the schools okay?

Thanks very much for your brutal honesty!

I'm local to Stafford but not originally from here. I like the town, it's big enough to have everything you need with great transport links to Birmingham and Manchester. My only criticisms are it could do with being a bit more culturally diverse and i'm consistently disappointed we keep re-electing a conservative MP.

Rowley park is expensive, beautiful and near the station but not the best location for primary and secondary schools. Most parents go for walton/baswich/wildwood at the south end and the property carries a premium and sells quickly due to 4 good primaries and a good high school. PenKridge train station is very accessible from the south end of town for commuting to Brum.

Happy to answer any other questions if I can help further.

nellyitsme · 28/07/2019 23:46

I'm from stafford and go there every week to visit family. I live in a village now and love it but miss the buzz of living in stafford.

Like @MrsWeatherwax said Rowley park is lovely it's mainly a private road although one of the secondary schools is very close by so the pupils are going to and fro in term time.

Look at:
Around the Newport road and up towards castle church
Walton on the hill area is v nice
Baswich
Milford
Brocton
Off Lichfield road - Warwick road, Lancaster road
The north end of town eg trinity fields area, Eccleshall Road area

Villages/ towns - the heywoods, Hyde lea and coppenhall
Eccleshall, stone, Weston Gnosall, haughton

I only just saw your post and I'm just off to bed but I'm happy to answer any of your questions tomorrow

Ps there was not long ago a very good labour MP for who got elected twice running

We looked at Stafford because there seems to be a lot of available and affordable housing, but I was massively put off by the town centre. Have you been? I think it was the people drinking alcohol from cans, in the street, in the middle of the day that put me off.

Lichfield, now, is lovely. But, of course, it’s more expensive and fewer properties available.

Russell19 · 29/07/2019 02:10

I went to the town centre a few weeks ago and there were people drinking candy in every other doorway and I saw 2 young ish people passed out (drugs???) lying in the street. Really put me off.

How about stone instead? Good schools nearby, a selective secondary nearby called St Joseph's.

Russell19 · 29/07/2019 02:10

Candy = cans

Haha!!!

Nat6999 · 29/07/2019 03:49

Look at Utoxeter, it's only 15 minutes drive from Stafford, I once went out with someone from Stafford & it's a dump.

PercyThrower · 29/07/2019 09:10

Oooo some mixed reviews.

We have been, but only for 2 hours (!) at the weekend. It was raining so hard that although we thought it looked nice, it was difficult to get a feel for the place.

We have been planning to move to the outskirts of Manc to be closer to family/ the hills but a job has come out of left field in Birmingham. The Stafford area is still fair enough North to make it just about manageable which is why we're looking at this area specifically.

I'll have a look into all the places mentioned and might be back with more questions! Thanks

Where are you moving from OP?

PercyThrower · 29/07/2019 09:36

Outskirts of London

We lived in Stafford for just over 10 years and I'm afraid you couldn't pay me to move back. We lived in Wildwood which is an estate on the south side which was nice in itself with an outstanding primary school but trying to get into Stafford (or across it!) when there were roadworks, an accident on the M6 (which is daily at present) the town centre is just gridlock.

And like PPs the town centre is a dump, yes there are new retail parks but the town itself is just charity shops, coffee shops and cards shops. My in-laws who still live in Wildwood don't tend to go into Stafford to go shopping anymore.

The hospital is struggling, the A&E isn't 24 hours and you end up having to go to Stoke for most things (I believe there is no dedicated children's ward there anymore).

Lichfield is lovely! We live in a town on the outskirts (couldn't afford Lichfield itself) it's only 30/40 mins from Birmingham, an hour from Leicester and has some good schools.

AdriannaP · 29/07/2019 09:44

Seriously no! Have been lots to visit family and the only plus side is cheap property.

missyB1 · 29/07/2019 09:49

No don’t do it. I grew up there and still have family there, I’m so glad I got out! There are some nice houses in a couple of areas (such as Rowley Park) but the town centre is a depressing dump.
Yes to Lichfield much nicer! Or look at Derbyshire.

missyB1 · 29/07/2019 09:51

Forgot to say the Hospital and lack of healthcare services is a real issue. It used to be a great hospital but there was a massive scandal and it was downgraded hugely.

hopski · 29/07/2019 09:57

Hospital is shit, see above
Town centre is shit, see above. For a decent clothes shopping trip you need a car.
To entertain children you need a car. Town park is ok but obviously gets very busy when the weathers nice.
Not sure about prices of buying houses as I rent but I can tell you rent is stupidly priced.
Traffic can be horrendous especially when an accident on motorway.
If I could move back to my birth town I would in a heart beat!!

Staffordislovely · 29/07/2019 10:09

Name changed especially for this!

I can't believe Stafford is being described as a dump!

I lived there for 20 + years and moved reluctantly. I visit family regularly. Like anywhere you need to pick your spot.

Where to live:
Rowley Park - Lovely private estate, very close to the train station and town. Catchment schools aren't great but Stafford Grammar Schøol is close (fee paying).

Walton on the hill/ Brocton are more 'rural' and have v. Good schools.

Great Haywood /Little Haywood are even more rural but really not far from Stafford /Litchfield.

Stone is a village north of Stafford - good schools & lovely location.

Stafford town itself has suffered because the council has moved retail to the edge and out of the town centre.
However, as far as towns go it is still pretty and there is a new shopping area cinema by the river.
Lovely town park and a good college.

Stafford has expanded rapidly over the last 20 years (as has everywhere) and has its problems.
Transport through town and into town is slow at peak times and roads get gridlocked. There are plenty of back routes though!

You are in the middle of the main road/ train lines M6/ fast train to London. You're in the middle of the country so everywhere is accessible.

There are some less desirable places to live but what town doesn't have it's downside?
I'm wondering where other posters have been or live?
Compared to many places, Stafford is lovely.

Staffordislovely · 29/07/2019 10:11

Agree that the hospital situation is not good.

Staffordislovely · 29/07/2019 10:15

If you are moving from the outskirts of London I imagine you will be able to afford to live in prime areas.
Living in Brocton/Walton/Rowley Park is very different to living in Highfields/Rising Brook or the north end.

clucky3 · 29/07/2019 10:45

I wouldn't move to Stafford, it's horrible. Given the job situation you'd be better off in the Cheshire countryside around Crewe or somewhere like that

nellyitsme · 29/07/2019 12:26

I'm shocked at the negativity about Stafford, thankfully there's a few positive voices @Staffordislovely @missyB1in this sea of negativity. If you go anywhere in 2019 Britain you will find empty town centres drunks and homeless people, roadworks. But to make sweeping generalisations about Stafford is very unfair

I'm from Stafford and, like I said, I go back once a week or more to visit family and friends. I've lived in other places too, so have been able to make comparisons. I was 15 years in London - it's a good job I didn't let the few homeless people hanging around with cans put me off - I lived in Birmingham, Newcastle, Sheffield and now a village in Derbyshire (sadly lots of towns in Derbyshire have problems of empty shops and homeless people, like some posters have attributed to Stafford. I chose to go back to live and work in stafford when I was going through very difficult person circumstances in my life and it was an ideal place for me to live. I loved it!

Some positives- the Victoria park in town, lovely gardens and a bandstand with regular concerts and activities, with a recently refurbished play area for kids and a skatepark for the older ones - it's always full every time I drive past it. St Mary's church and the churchyard and the lanes around it -try the grove or the soup kitchen for coffee and cakes. Mill st and Mill bank - lots of individual shops and an art gallery/coffee bar. St chads church -very old. The Swan hotel, the ancient high house, the old traditional market hall, plus regular food Fairs, markets and activities in the market square. The castle which also holds regular events including a outdoor Shakespeare production. There's some lovely old buildings too, Pubs clubs restaurants , the gatehouse theatre, a new cinema and shopping mall - people, me included, aren't happy that planners and councillors tore the centre of the town up and dragged it all into the area around the river with the new mall at the other end of town with new library and council offices.

There's some active Facebook pages - one called "friends of stafford" who are trying to work with planners and councillors to regenerate the old parts of stafford and as far as I know there is progress being made

The schools are good as far as I know - I did ok and I've heard no complaints from my family and friends with school age children. The FE college seems good too.
Sadly the hospital provision has been reduced due to the big scandal - there's an active Facebook group to try to revive it. My dad was in the hospital around the time of the scandal and I much preferred it to the care that my mum got form Stoke hospital a few years ago which resulted in us making a safeguarding compliant. There's lots of new housing been built as well as a military community that's increased in recent years - all needing schools, housing and healthcare, so to have cut the hospital (and the university) back really doesn't make sense

OP I'm probably biased about stafford, but you need to go and look at it with your eyes open - people are friendly - there was always the myth that stafford people are stuck up, put about by stoke and Black Country people- but they're great when you get to know them

Good luck with your search. I'll try to answer any of your questions

Oh and don't forget to go to Cannock Chase if you fancy a walk or a picnic it's a secret paradise and a brilliant visitors centre with coffee shops and activities going on

Wingedharpy · 29/07/2019 16:31

@PercyThrower, try asking for views and opinions on www.staffordforum.com
There are a couple of posts on there already regarding moving to the area - some more recent than others.

Wobblington · 29/07/2019 16:42

I wouldn't move back to Stafford. I grew up there and still go back regularly to visit family and it is a town that feels like it's on the decline. If you dont have to commute anywhere by car and are happy online shopping then its probably tolerable I'm not sure where I would pick locally though as not a fan of Uttox either. Have no idea about schools.

KDoT · 29/07/2019 23:39

Moved to Stafford from Wrexham 20 years ago and am now 26, the people are not nice, rude, bitchy, up themselves ( says ALOT of people not from Stafford including myself ) the school's sees alot of bullying, jobs are scarce And the wage is low, rent is high, I rented a one bedroom for £500 by one bedroom I mean bed in a room. The kids are constantly rude, and not sure the colour you are but if you are black you will experience the look and funny vibes, not everyone is bad tho, can come some real nice people,

omafiet · 29/07/2019 23:49

I lived in the Castletown area and loved it. I don't recognize the negative comments at all. I agree with @Staffordislovely and would live there again.

Rainbowknickers · 30/07/2019 06:43

I moved from York to Stafford almost 3 years ago and love it here
We bought a house for a fraction of what we could have bought in York
Only difference is the shopping is shite

WhiteDust · 30/07/2019 07:12

KDot
Massive generalisation there!
You haven't met nice people but there are thousands of people in Stafford.
I haven't met many nice people where I live but I'm not going to condemn the whole town because of it! Hmm
