so were buying a lovely house in uttoxeter. Ive noticed lots of houses have alarms. The house were buying has one! Where we live now no one does!!! Im feeling a bit funny about having it....

Is Uttoxeter an area I need to set this thing??? I live in an area where NOTHING happens!

I grew up in Uttoxeter, so this info is old. We were burgled once when I was at primary school (25+ years ago) but afaik its a pretty safe place! Uttoxeter used to be tiny and there's been a lot of housing development in the last 20 years so maybe it's just a case of a lot of new builds and it's a standard addition to these?

its just something I`m really not used to seeing I suppose. Its obviously the norm in that part of the UK thats all.

I've lived in Uttoxeter for 20 years now and it's generally pretty safe. Take the usual precautions and use general common sense but definitely no need to be over the top. It's a lovely town and if you haven't done it before a visit to the races is a must. Are you loving onto one of the new estates?

Blounts Drive has had some history of burglaries but not heard of anything recently. As a town that sits right on major through routes like the A50 and Stafford Road which Blounts Drive is off it can make for an easy getaway for burglars. Might be worth a chat to the local PCSO's or your new neighbours who will give you an accurate picture.

oh. I live in area where sleep outs in the tent in the garden are common for kids. Leaving a top window open is fine when out doing my shop. I can let my 12 yr old ds who is high functioning autism be home alone for 1/2 an hour.

sounds like both will stop.

it is sometimes said that a burglar walking down a road will look at the houses and choose the one that looks easiest.

So an open window, a front door with just a Yale lock, a ladder left helpfully at the side of the house, car keys close to the letterbox, will all attract her more than the neighbours' more secure home.

It follows that if your neighbour (appears to) have a modern alarm system that is turned on, and yours doesn't, your house will seem the easier of the two.

it is also sometimes said that the greatest deterrent effect of an alarm is a visible bell-box on the front and the back of the house. Many boxes now have little flashing lights to make them more prominent.

Burglars will also know that if a front or back door, or garage, is open, then the alarm is probably not set. Only the cheaper DIY alarms, AFAIK, will set if a protected door is open.

Round my way most burglaries seem to be carried out by teenage crack-heads, who have no understanding of alarms or locks, and will just lob a brick through a window and run away if an alarm sounds. They are particularly fond of tools left unattended, and garden sheds.
