Paint or replace

I'm moving into a new house and I really don't like the internal doors. They are very shiny and not my style at all. Has anyone any experience with painting this kind of wood? It would it be really expensive to replace them as there are so many doors to rooms and cupboards. Also, the windows are a red kind of wood. Maybe these could be painted too? I will attach some photos and would be really grateful for ideas.

The doors could absolutely be painted and would probably look nice a very soft sheen or similar.

Not so sure about the windows. They look treated/varnished type. Would need lots of prep to 'key' the paint. Not only would they be fiddly to paint, but painted windows then need constantly repainting and also end up sticking shut etc.

Could you replace the windows with UPVC?

Thanks Pebbles the doors are very highly varnished though. Will they need to be rigorously sanded?

These days you don't need to do a lot of sanding. Use a good primer - Zinsser primer, the one not for bare wood, is what you need. You don't need to sand at all, but if there are any rough patches or drips in the current finish then sanding them smooth first would be best. A couple of coats of primer and you can paint with your choice of top coat.

We used too have windows like that when we moved into our house. I hated them. They were (to me) ugly and very un secure. We had to keep replacing the handles as they kept falling off.

I would replace the windows and paint the doors.

I've just re-read a reply upthread - painted windows need to be re-painted periodically, not constantly. Any wooden window frames need maintenance whatever the finish. They will only stick shut if you don't allow sufficient time for the paint to dry before closing them.

Thanks everyone.

The kitchen/diner especially has about 5 different colours of wood in the kitchen cupboards, windows, internal doors, external doors, floors and that's without any furniture. I want to reduce this as much as possible and paint what I can white.

I will price up replacing the windows as they are very ugly as you said soaked
