How do I get a washing machine up three flights of stairs?

As part of a kitchen reorganisation I’m thinking of turning my loft conversion bathroom into a laundry room.

I’ve got a plumber sorted out to do the work, but he is expecting us to get the washing machine up there. DH and I are physically fit but not particularly strong. What do we do? Hire some “man with van” chaps? Hire a special trolley thing? Has anyone done this?

Had the same issue .

Fortunately, the plumber organised another strong bloke, and it was fine.
Two hugely strong and fairly careful blokes, that's what you need.
Local Rugby or rowing club, for a donation to their funds?

Are you buying a new washer or just moving the existing one?
If new, can you ask for 2 delivery men and explain the location of your delivered item?
Or, you can hire a stair climbing sack truck that will move up to 150kgs.
Quick Google says most washing machines approx 91 kg or under.

www.hirestation.co.uk for sack truck hire.

I have never used them or done what you ask.

One of those trolleys woth 3 wheels that Rotate.. still need someone strong . You will have to pay someone or the company to get it up there I would imagine .

I moved washing machine up 2 flights of stairs with my ex, I wouldn't say I'm massively strong but I'm determined, he was probably stronger than average.
When I moved out I had 2 removals blokes move it down with no issues, people move into flats with appliances all the time I don't think it's a massive deal.
Ours was also an upstairs utility, only place it would physically fit but it was a pain in the arse imo lugging washing up and down all the time. Carrying washing baskets full of wet washing while pregnant and with young dc was awful.

Man with van plus one. £20 job done.

Place a piece of cardboard under it and slide it up. Newer washing machine seem to have less counter weights in them than ghetto older models. Washing machine are not so heavy as you imagine.

Unless it's a Meile with a concrete slab base or should be easy enough with two of you or a strong friend!

What kind of stairs are we talking about? I assume it's an actual staircase? If so, shouldn't be hard to find two fairly strong removal type guys. I live in a top floor flat, 76 stairs, and had a few delivered with not hassle.

We got our washing machine up a flight of stairs on a sack barrow. It was not the easiest task and but we managed. If you can get a couple of people that are used to moving such an object I would definitely recommend that over doing it yourself.

When we bought ours, the shop gave a choice of delivery options. Cheapest was a driver on his own who bring it on a trolley and would only be able to get it up the normal 2-3 steps into the house. The other option was a 2 man team who'd deliver it up more stairs, i.e. for flats etc. Just ask at the shop about delivery options before you buy it.

I had a new machine delivered (John Lewis) and just our the delivery address as 1st floor, my house address. They took it upstairs without a problem (and no additional cost)

WicketWoo · 26/07/2019 08:01

Put (not our!)

I’ve moved a washing machine single handed out of my car boot, along the drive and up a few steps - you just balance it on the edge of the first step and wiggle it up corner to corner, so you’re never taking the weight yourself. But I’d recommend having a second person there for whole flights of stairs to help counterbalance it between two of you.
Or as PPs have said, get the shop to organise it!

Thanks all. We’re looking to relocate our existing washing machine probably, (although it’s got some rust on the exterior so maybe not) and definitely keep the existing tumble dryer and the four flights of stairs are 12/4/10/7 with 2 180 degree turns. Quite a big ask.

My mum in same position. Order over phone with argos and tell them, they will arrange a 2 person delivery to take it up.

AntiHop · 26/07/2019 08:22

I had this problem with a fridge freezer when I lived in a high up flat in a building with no lift. I ordered from so, explained the stairs and they said it would be fine. When the deliver guys arrived, they said it was definitely not possible and they took it away. I then tried currys, and they were at least clear in the shop that their delivery guys couldn't do it. It was something about needing a certain number of steps with a landing for them to rest. So they might be able to do it for you, it's worth checking. But not for us.

So we hired a company that specialised in small removals. Currys delivered it and left it outside our flat, the company we hired bought it up the stairs.

We never had any other problems with stuff being delivered up all the stairs, like sofa, bed etc.
