Areas in Wiltshire

Hi looking to buy a property in Wiltshire moving from rental in Oxfordshire. areas that look within our budget are Devizes and Calne.
Mentioned Calne to a customer who was from the area said not to touch Calne as it was a rough area with not much going for it.
Is this an old view? Any areas to avoid in a 10 mile radius?
Many thanks

I have lived near both and would pick Devizes every time, your customer was right. D also has some good outlying villages if that would suit you. Bear in mind that Wiltshire is largely a rural county, more so than Oxfordshire, and you will spend a reasonable amount of time in the car if you drive. Rail stations are not near and the roads can be slow, but the pace of life is great IMO. Good luck Smile

My mum lived in a village called Colerne for years. It was gorgeous...amazing walks, views, people etc. Loved it there! Was so sad when she moved

I'm in Trowbridge.

Nice, quiet area. Near fields, can hear cows mooing in the morning. Lots of trees and green areas.

Public transport isn't too bad, either. A few years ago it was dire, they've really pulled their fingers out.

Nice sports centre. Large. Clean.

Shops aren't massively exciting but you can get most of what you need and I mostly shop online anyway.

What is your budget and requirements?

XClaireX · 26/07/2019 06:17

Budget is in the region of £200000.
We are looking initially for a weekend/holiday home that in time would become our full time home. We have accommodation with our job but would like the security of our own home. 10 Yr old child plus dog. Work is very full on so we would not have the time to take on a project. Odd bits of DIY painting is fine. Happy with two beds if decent size ie can fit double beds.

Look around Salisbury if considering schools for the children.

We're about to complete on a house in Devizes and can't wait to move there. The estate agent who also lives in Devizes was saying the town is putting a lot of effort in to seem desirable with regular markets, food festivals (many different festivals actually), confetti battle, lantern parade, picnics in the park etc. Seems like a really nice place to live if you have children.

Calne is not a nice place. Lived there for 10 years and couldnt wait to get out after finding out what it was like. Worst thing we ever did moving to Calne. Not nice people and full of small town corruption and cronyism. Its a run down town still living in the 1970s. It has a reputation for violence and abuse. Do not buy a property in Calne

Calne also stinks. It has stunk for decades and is unbearable at times. Every few years so new green behind the ears cllr thinks they will find the problem but they never do. Its a landfill town and most of the locals work at the landfill dump. We didnt know about the smell of Calne until we moved into our house and would never have bought in the area had we known. The new housing developments are built on marshland and only a couple pf years old and the estates flood. www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c807re95e19o.amp
