When do you lose the sun in the evening?

At the moment we are lucky enough to have a sun trap in our garden until about 8pm. I am looking to move to a house that loses the sun at about 6.30pm.

Would this be a deal breaker for you? What time do you lose the sun in your garden in the evening?

About 2pm in our west-facing garden.

AndreaDonno · 23/07/2019 22:42

When it disappears over the horizon.

Our garden is west facing at the back so the back of the house gets the sun from the middle of the day right through to sun set.

Our garden spans out to the side of the house so which is North East facing so we get the sunrise in that part of the garden and are lucky enough to get the sun in different parts of the garden throughout the entire day, from dawn to dusk.

We love eating outside when it's sunny so losing the sun at 6:30 would be a bit of a blow. However, I'd rather have the sun all day and lose it at 6:30 than having no sun all day until say 4 or 5pm until sunset.

zebrapig · 23/07/2019 22:45

Somewhere between 5-6pm. We have sun all day though and tonight we were still sitting out at nearly 10pm. It would be nice to have it in the evening too but it's nice to have it all day. Our garden faces NE.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 23/07/2019 22:45

Just to clarify, our garden is west-facing but we lose the sun at 2pm because of some very large trees right behind our relatively small garden.

EagleRay · 23/07/2019 22:46

No sun in my small garden after 4pm - tried to pretend for years that it didn't matter but it does and now we are moving and the sun thing is a dealbreaker more than schools

Greenolivesorblackolives · 23/07/2019 22:48

We lose it about 7 but doesn’t bother us as we rarely sit outside in the evening. However, we use the garden in the day a lot, so perfect for us.

sweetkitty · 23/07/2019 22:52

Usually most of the garden by about 5-6pm apart from about a third of it which has the sun all day. We get the sun through the back windows in the morning then it swings round the front for the evening. Part is South facing though the sunny third bit.

buttertoasty · 23/07/2019 22:53

North facing. And neighbours have a really high fence. So about 5pm.

BoronationStreet · 23/07/2019 22:54

8pm and I hate it. I'd love a back yard that lost the sun around 5.

peanutbutterismydownfall · 23/07/2019 23:03

About 6pm I think. I hadn't really noticed until a friend came over and wouldn't stop going on about how she couldn't live with that and I was just Hmmas it is still light & warm, just not in direct sunlight. And what we do get is sun in the morning which is important as I love having my breakfast outside.

minipie · 24/07/2019 00:07

We’re SE facing with tall ish houses around and get sun from first thing till about 4-6 pm depending on time of year and which bit of garden.

It’s never bothered me. I like having a sunny kitchen in the morning for breakfast and on hot days it’s actually a relief to lose the sun.

That said I’m not particularly bothered about eating dinner outdoors, and we eat at 8.30 or later so it’s hardly ever still sunny by then no matter which way we faced.

WishIwas19again · 25/07/2019 07:01

7pm, but we get it from 6am and big chunks of the garden have sun all day. We've young kids so it suits us as we're mostly outside during the day, and doing bedtime 6.30-8pm. It's normally too cold to sit outside when we've finished so doesn't bother us now, may do more when the kids stay up later

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/07/2019 07:06

We're east facing at the back so our own house blocks the sun from our back garden from about 3pm starting right by the house but it takes til 7-8pm until there's no sun at all. Unfortunately the lady little sunny spot isn't very nice to sit in, but that's a project for next year!

ParadigmGiraffe · 25/07/2019 07:13

About 6.30 South west facing. It’s a back yard with high walls covered I. Climbers and roses so it stays warm and sheltered and still stays warm. The fragrance from the flowers is lovely.

So I don’t mind not having sun.

But crossed fingers moving to a larger south west facing garden. Should keep sun longer.

TheFridgeRaider · 25/07/2019 09:50

It would be a deal breaker for me. I wanted south facing, have south west so lose sun when sun goes down. I do grow veggies though so sunny garden was more important than other things in a house. However, I don't like sun because I burn easilyBlush

hartof · 25/07/2019 09:54

Our patio loses the sun around 8-8.30pm. The grass starts to be in the shade from around 3pm as the sun starts to travel around the house at the end of our garden, so we've got the best of both worlds.

Poochnewbie · 25/07/2019 10:00

When the sun disappears over the horizon.
We get it in some part of the garden all day. We have a morning patio and an evening one. We have areas where we’ve created shade for the kids and the dog so nobody has to burn.
Losing the sun early would be a deal breaker for me.

PooWillyBumBum · 25/07/2019 10:13

We lose ours 5-6 currently. I don't mind. If it's hot it's a relief after a day of sun, if it's cooler and we want to be outside we whack on the wood burner and light some citronella candles.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 25/07/2019 10:15

6:30pm would be a deal-breaker for me because on 3/4 nights a week, DP or I won't be home then, so we wouldn't get to sit outside together...

But it won't be a deal-breaker to people who don't sit outside in the evening, or prefer shade, so I don't think it's a massive issue as long as it fits you and your lifestyle.

ithinkiammelting · 25/07/2019 10:17

Our garden faces due west, and we get the sun until it goes down, and ours too is a sun trap. Trouble is, we have no shade to speak of at all and the last few days it has been so hot out there you literally can't go outside for more than a couple of minutes. I yearn for shade!

Enb76 · 25/07/2019 10:20

About 1/2 hour before it goes down depending on the season. I don't get the very last rays. I would now always choose a north or north-east facing house so that the garden faces south/south-west.

Enb76 · 25/07/2019 10:21

I've built my garden so that there is always somewhere shady to sit though so it's never unbearable even on days like today.

FinallyHere · 25/07/2019 10:30

Small and easy facing so not much sun after 2pm. Bliss in this heat.

TheFridgeRaider · 25/07/2019 11:14

@ithinkiammelting I can highly recommend this. It has retractable canopy. Really practical!
(Not my pic. Random from google)

When do you lose the sun in the evening?
ithinkiammelting · 26/07/2019 09:56

That's lovely #TheFridgeRaider but my garden is almost entirely filled with plants and there wouldn't be anywhere to put it. My patio is about twice the size of the coffee table in that pic!
