Any wasp experts about?

I knew we had an old wasps nest in our small loft as I discovered it in the winter while putting in new loft lagging.
It is ginormous - roughly the size of a beach ball.
DH in his wisdom advised leaving it alone as "wasps don't come back to the same nest - they abandon them and build new ones".
Not that I don't trust him, but I googled it anyway and what I read appeared to confirm what he said.
However....
in the garden today and it is obvious that there is a lot of wasp activity around the roof (single storey extension) and wasps are happily going in and out under a roof tile that is slightly warped (old Victorian terrace).
My question is, could these wasps damage the building in any way?
They aren't troubling us and don't come in to the house but will they eat my roof?
Should we be doing something about this?
No use asking DH as if he knows they're there he'll be feeding the buggers!
We're all God's creatures and all that....
Many thanks.

They don't go back to old nests but obviously they have built a new one, they shouldn't do any damage though and will die off by October BUT they will get nasty at the end of August when the grubs die off (they eat the sweet stuff the grubs secrete so when there's no sweet stuff they go crazy for anything else sweet they can find) Personally I'd get rid of them but I'm biased and have the evil buggers 😅

They can cause damage! A few years ago we had one fall through the ceiling into my 2yr olds bedroom. Thankfully no one was in there. The pest control guy said that that many stings could have killed her. Get a professional in asap.

Wasps chew and regurgitate wood to make their nests so they could be causing damage. Call a pest controller.
