Kitchen Island Units

I'm about to start planning a new kitchen finally and before I get my hopes up I wondered if my kitchen is big enough for an island. We were thinking of having a hob on the island and plenty of work space. However the kitchen is smallish and not sure if it would fit in comfortably. The kitchen is 8.2m by 4.5m, its just a simple rectangle with nothing in the way as such. Would this work?

Will you be having units down each wall - if so I think that's maybe a little too small. If you assume 600ml lost to cupboards each side that gives 3300 ml left. I don't know how big an island would be 900wide? Gives 2400 so 4ft each side. Does it give you enough space to manoeuvre around?

JoJoSM2 · 22/07/2019 16:56

That’s a massive kitchen. As per the post above, run of units and island will fit. If you want cabinets along all walls, there won’t be space for an island.

Mummyshark2018 · 22/07/2019 20:36

Your kitchen is massive Hmm. We've just done a 6x6 extension and have a 900mmX 2300mm island and two walls of units and there's still enough room for a large table and a small sitting area

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 22/07/2019 21:44

8.2 x 4.5. Hmm, it’ll be a bit pinched. I wouldn’t or cat swinging will be hard

chopc · 23/07/2019 15:13

@Mummyshark2018 do you have a picture of your layout? We will have a 8.4m x 5.6m space and wondering how to arrange everything to fit a large table and a small sofa

Mummyshark2018 · 23/07/2019 16:23

@chopc
It looks like this. Where it says svp this is actually 3 tall larder units.

I think that looks like plenty of space! It’ll be gorgeous.

I had a kitchen 4m wide and about 6m long, and used a peninsular rather than an island. It gave more room for the door to open and people to walk through. The peninsular met the worktop about a metre from the sink, so making a U-shape food prep area. The worktop on the peninsula sat on a row of cabinets (mostly pan drawers) with an overhang on the dining side. For appearance, I clad the backs of the units with matching drawers, then later realised that by taking out the unit backs, I could put shallow shelving accessed from that side. Handy for bottles, glasses, biscuits and books.

You will have more workspace than with an island. Plumbing and wiring is easier.

Despite what the showrooms suggest, people don't really sit on barstools chatting to the cook, and it doesn't need to be so deep that you can't reach the other side with your sponge.

"clad the backs of the units with matching doors"

I have to disagree with that! However a peninsular has the same ability to have stools round. We had that in my last kitchen and it kept people out when talking to me (whilst I cooked Wink)

Thank you @Mummyshark2018

We have also just tried to figure out where we could have an island in our smaller 5.5m X 3m kitchen space. We can't. Now thinking of a peninsula instead. This would allow us to have somewhere for prep but also be able to look into the garden and keep an eye on DC.

Alexalee · 24/07/2019 14:09

not so stealthy boast alert
8.2m x 4.5m small... yeah ok op...

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 25/07/2019 07:46

Put your plans up OP

Hecateh · 25/07/2019 11:14

My kitchen is just under 4m sq. I knew and island wasn't the best use of space - a peninsular would be far better but my heart wanted one. I live alone - so heart won AND I don't regret it at all. it's only 1200 square but it's big enough for 2 stools (3 could sit there but only enough storage for 2 stools). So long as you have a minimum of a metre between units it's fine. I also have my hob on it.

Linguaphile · 25/07/2019 11:25

At the risk of derailing the thread, isn’t it called a peninsula (not a peninsular)? Or have I been using peninsula my whole life and getting it wrong?

kitty1976 · 25/07/2019 11:27

Hi, sorry I haven’t replied back sooner. I think a peninsular unit will be better as I really don’t think the kitchen is big enough for an island which is a shame. It was definitely not a stealthy boast, just looking for opinions.

@Linguaphile a = noun, ar = adjective

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 25/07/2019 11:43

Kitty - what is the orientation? I think it makes a difference. 8m is big, but the 4.5 isn’t. Do you have doors? Where are they?
