I seem to have blown a gasket

...or whatever you call those rubber door seals on your washing machine.

We have mice in the shed, who have pissed all over DS's baby stuff. I washed it yesterday and somehow a plastic stick got mixed up in there, which has pierced the rubber seal.

I've just phoned a local repair shop and they're quoting £140 for the part and £60 to fit it, and probably a 2 week wait.

I've seen the same part online for just over half the price. Normally I'd be happy to pay the extra to have it done properly, but I'm a skint student.

How difficult would it be to order online and get DH to repair? Are these cheaper parts likely to be fake? It's a Samsung washer dryer, if that helps.

Mumsnet users, hit me with your wisdom!!

If it were me, I would read up about how to do it - i found this online:

Then get DH to watch a million few YouTube videos on it and then have a go. Good luckThanks

I'd try and fit it yourself - usually a good YouTube video will help with instructions. I can't imagine it's that hard, tbh.

@andantecantabile - Great minds and all that! :)

BE CAREFUL, we did exactly this with our machine, it all went well until it started making banging noises soon afterwards. it turned out that in fitting the new seal DH had had to undo some screws which he'd done back up but they should have had that waterproof tape or something or other, anyway i can't remember the details but the screws worked loose and broke something vital and the machine was done for. It was a Bosch. i'll ask him the details later tonight so you don't make the same mistake as i did

@PinkOboe oh God, that's just what I was afraid of! Just watched a few videos online and am keen to give it a go, but it's a £600 machine if I balls it up Confused

My husband did ours and it’s been fine since. We got the seal from the local market stall that sells spare parts. Ours is a beko. It wasn’t that difficult.

I've ordered the part, hopefully it'll arrive before we go on holiday next week. Would like some clean clothes in my suitcase!!

How did it go?

mamansnet · 26/07/2019 12:52

Amazing, thanks! The part arrived ridiculously fast. I showed DH the video, he had a go and it's working perfectly. Saved by the videos on espares.com!!!
