Is it worthy spending a fortune to have a double basin vanity in the only (tiny) family bathroom?

We are renovating the house. We don't have lots of space to play with. Only one small bathroom to be built. We have two boys to grow up in the house.

I really like the idea of having a double basin vanity unit put in the bathroom (just just fit in). But the price of a nice one is nearly £1000. We might get some trader discount, but I'm not entirely sure if it's the right decision.

Any experience to share please~~

Thanks!

Honestly? I wouldn't. You never know, you might move on. If you are thinking it would be helpful to have space for them to both brush teeth at the same time, why not just go for a very wide basin? This one is a metre wide and suitable for small bathrooms. And under £250.

growlingbear · 17/07/2019 17:12

Sorry, that link didn't work. Try this

growlingbear · 17/07/2019 17:13

Sorry. Not working. But look up extra wide slender bathroom sinks at local suppliers. You can get a great range from 600mm to 1000mm for a fraction of the price.

Icedlatte · 17/07/2019 17:13

Personally I don't see the appeal. I'd rather do my bathroom stuff in peace on my own. Brushing teeth takes only a couple of minutes per person, I don't think it would be much of a time saver.

lululatetotheparty · 17/07/2019 17:15

I have a double one and it does take up a lot of space... but we have a huge bathroom. However, we only end up using one basin most of the time and the other basin ends up being a dumping ground! I would have a single basin which is on the large size and also with space around it to put things on etc.

iknowimcoming · 17/07/2019 17:16

No I wouldn't better to have a good sized single sink and have more space in there imo

BertieDrapper · 17/07/2019 17:17

I've always wanted a double sink and would plan to do one when we do the bathroom next..... no more DH beard shavings left in my very own sink... what bliss!

Anyway I saw someone the other day who had a frame fabricated, bought a piece of marble worktop, had it cut for waste pipes etc and bought two sinks. Much cheaper then a big unit .

Maybe look into that x

PotteringAlong · 17/07/2019 17:17

No, it’s not worth it.

Wildwood6 · 17/07/2019 17:41

We have one, purely because it was in the house when we bought it, and like you we only have one bathroom. It was never something that had appealed to me at all. We're now looking to move and are seriously thinking about putting one in our new place as its an absolute godsend when you're falling over each other rushing to get out the door in the morning...

bookgirl1982 · 17/07/2019 17:44

Ikea do one which is much cheaper. We have a single one from them which is great quality.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 17/07/2019 17:49

We’ve had double basins in two houses and never used them at the same time. I wouldn’t pay to put them in, but then again it’s not the only bathroom. We did design both bathrooms from new, but were just sucked in by marketing and visual appeal. We also had plenty of space, so not the same criteria as you to be fair.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 17/07/2019 17:58

We asked our builder to add double sinks to our ensuite when we bought this house off plan. Yes, we did use them both at same time occasionally but we have just renovated the bathroom and put in a single instead.
Victoria plumb have some decent doubles

didireallysaythat · 17/07/2019 19:03

We have a double sink from IKEA - best thing we did. No more getting covered in toothpaste when everyone is trying to get ready in the morning.

mathanxiety · 18/07/2019 00:57

Yes I would do it, not only for the practicality as people get ready in the morning for school and work but also because they are going to be popular and if you will be selling at any point having one in already will be a plus.

BingBo · 18/07/2019 11:42

Thank you, ladies.

Didn't think of privacy and personal space that much. But DH apparently thinks it matters.

I didn't realise IKEA has it. Last time when I checked somehow only found they sell it in other countries. For £320 and only 103cm length, I think it's a no brainer. (If DH doesn't want stand around me using it, DS certainly wouldn't mind and he'd actually found it very nice to brush teeth with me together!

Thanks for the tips!

We have one where the 2nd basin is not much used, but then it's in an ensuite and we have another bathroom.
if you have kids and the usual morning rush I'd have thought it could be very useful to have 2 basins, esp. if you have a dh/partner who needs to shave.

mathanxiety · 18/07/2019 19:16

I am not sure privacy could matter all that much when you have two people just needing to shave or brush teeth before leaving in the morning.

BingBo · 20/10/2019 15:20

Got IKEA BRÃ…VIKEN. Loving it. Looks absolutely gorgeous.

We all primarily tend to use the tap on the right, probably because of the instinct to be on the right? But with the choice of accommodating a second person at the same time when in a rush, it's proven to be very handy. Plus the reasonable size for this one, DH didn't complain at all.

Not worth it, get something single and stylish, mine was £400

BubblesBuddy · 20/10/2019 15:43

We do have a long single basin with two mixer taps in our en suite. We have 4 bathrooms so it wasn’t needed but it looks stunning! However DH and I never use it together. We like to use the en suite on our own. So it was purely looks over necessity. However the en suite is big.

If your bathroom is small, just get a decent sink, around 600 wide, not too deep, and make space for storage. We have wall hung Duravit cupboards and drawers under the sink. I would value storage over two sinks. How long will your boys want to share a sink? You can clean teeth in the kitchen sink if need be!

Appletreehouse · 21/10/2019 13:34

I never understand the concept of having two sinks in one bathroom! Just wait until one person has finished, or do alternative tasks, like one has a shower while the other does their teeth? Seems a lot of expense to save 3 min a day. Each to their own I suppose, but in a small space I think it could look overpowering (depending how small is small!)

Svalberg · 22/10/2019 14:20

It's a godsend that I don't have to wipe the sink every time I need to use it. We never use the sinks at the same time, he keeps his mess to his side & I keep mine to my side. Everyone happy.

TobyHouseMan · 23/10/2019 12:48

Do you want one? Can you afford it? Will it give you pleasure every time you look at it? Then I say yes, go for it.

We are looking to put one in our ensuite soon. Currently have a 'stop-gap' single sink. The plan is to find an old piece of brown furniture we can re-purpose and put two counter-top sinks on the top.
