Extractor Fan recommendations please? (Utility Room and Interior Shower Room)

We have been told by Building Control that we need to fit an extractor fan in our new utility room (even though the room has a large window and door).
We don't think this is a bad idea as I often hang the washing before going off to work (window and door closed).
Is there such a thing as an extractor fan that we can switch on for say 2 -4 hours on a timer?
All the extractor fans we have looked at come with a 30 minute timer and is connected to the light switch (which we don't want).
It would need to have a back shutter as the fan will be mounted on to an exterior wall.

Also looking for bathroom extractor fan recommendations - something very quiet yet powerful. Happy to pay for the right fan, but there are so many fans on the market!!! Which one to choose??

TIA for any recommendations Smile

Vent-Axia Svara. It's a constant low speed trickle fan with boost mode when it senses light, motion or humidity.

Also very quiet in trickle mode.

Not cheap but worth it. We have them in most rooms in the house.

If you're looking for an inline bathroom fan, these are pretty powerful and quiet:

Envirovent SILMV 250/100

It's the same as a Soler and Palau, just a different badge.

Thanks for the recommendations.
@AndreaDonno - have you ever had problems with the APP at all?

No, no problems with the app as such. It's not really an "app controlled fan" in that you use the app to set up how you want it to work rather than to turn it on and off ad hoc.

The annoying thing is that in the event of a power cut the fan forgets its settings and the settings return to default when power is restored. It could really do with a little back up battery so it remembers the settings.

Having said that, default settings should be absolutely fine for a utility room so you probably won't bother customising settings anyway.

A modern extractor fan will run for about 166 hours on 15pence worth of electricity.

Splash out, leave it on all day.

Buying a timer will cost you more than you'll save.

Many modern extractors come with a backdraught shutter, but you'll need a vent on the outside wall. This is best I know. it sheds rain, deflects wind, and has a single large flap concealed that will prevent wind blowing in.

unlike the ones with several little flaps, it will not constantly rattle annoyingly and will not fall apart in a strong wind.

If you want, you can paint the outer shell to tone with the wall. I have brown ones.

This is a very good small fan for a WC, utility room or bathroom without shower. It is extremely quiet.

You can get one with a timer for twice the price, or a humidstat, but consider how many years it would take you to save that. A simple on/off switch is all you need and will last longer.

I've seen a reputable brand of fan of similar low noise but does not have a shutter, and the description doesn't mention a ball-bearing motor or elastic block mounting, for even less. On examination it is almost the same.

older fans are very much noisier, especially when they're worn out.

These new quiet ones are inaudible when you shut the door.

lots of people grumble about the noise of fans, or think they are costly to run. Modern ones cure that.

@AndreaDunno - thanks for the App information.
@PigletJohn - thanks for the recommendations - and info:
15p for 166 hours! Yes, definitely not worth getting one with a timer.
The Silent 100 would be good for the Utility Room, and very tempted by the Vent-Axia Svara in the shower room, despite the price.

It's all relative. £100 gets you a great fan that will provide continuous extraction 24/7 with a boost feature when humidity rises or when light is detected.

It also has a 5 year guarantee so look at it as £20 per year for a fan with any additional years as a freebie rather than £100.

An inline fan, such as Millstone suggested, or others on my link, is ideal for a room with a shower. That one has about three times the power of a typical wall fan, and is very quiet. Being big, they are usually positioned above the ceiling. If in the loft, the sound is even more muffled. There are other models with different powers.
