Underfloor heating and floor level

Good afternoon! We wanted to have underfloor heating in the kitchen/ diner and lounge only but replace the floor throughout the ground floor. Our builder says we should have underfloor heating throughout to keep the floor level the same. However we are reluctant as we don't want the additional cost.

Could you suggest other ways of keeping the floor level?

Thanks in advance!

That sounds tricky.. but I guess it depends on what type of underfloor heating you want, wet or dry? I don't know too much but think a dry system is physically thinner. Having looked at this question in my own house, I wonder why you want underfloor heating? Is it so you can have radiatorless rooms? To be effective through the winter, underfloor heating needs to be kept on a low setting constantly. I was told it takes a long time to heat a room. That it's good at keeping your feet warm but not great at heating the whole room volume during the coldest days. Perhaps you plan on having both? Has your builder told you what the difference in height will be? We have one room without a new floor and the step up is only 22mm. We never notice it.

You could also build up the level of the floor with those sheets of green stuff they put under laminate before you carpet/lay wooden floors.

Surely your builder can just put insulation on the inheated floor area to make it the same height?

Thanks everyone! I told him to come up with a less expensive solution to level the areas without underfloor heating

@SheffieldTablet do you have uniform flooring throughout? And don't notice the 22mm?
