Anyone know it? Looking at buying a holiday cottage there (prices are good but maybe for a reason?!).

Which areas are the best? One we’re considering is Fortunes Well.

Thanks.

Do people stay on Portland? Never considered it a holiday destination myself, it is near lots of tourist things, and there is some good stuff to see on Portland, but if this is an investment will it get tourist rental yields?

Well, holiday rentals there appear booked through most of July/August and scattered through rest of year. Popular for fishing, water sports, walkers etc. And of course good base for Jurassic Coast.

My one concern is only few eating places/shops but I guess put in context for the size of the place it’s not bad. Plus Weymouth just across the way.

Know the area well and wouldn't stay on Portland, it's a bit run down tbh and has an odd atmosphere off season.

Run ! Portland is dire. Go there and stay for a week ( it'll feel like a year! ) and see for yourself. Plenty of quaint villages inland and other sea side locations to look at while you stay.
Don't invest without spending time at the location you're considering.

Portland is fascinating! It really depends what you want. It is run down and it's not a place I'd want to live but I could happily rent a holiday home there. A walk round the whole island is 10.5 miles ( but obvious you can do bits if it) you'd pass two prisons, 2 lighthouses, quarries, beautiful coves, cliffs.....
There are one or two nice places to eat- regular buses to Weymouth. Lovely little museum... I think it's great

I wouldn't buy an investment property on Portland. It is cheap for a reason. It has its charms, but I live nearby and wouldn't ever consider encouraging any friends to stay there. If you need any more info, feel free to PM me. But seriously, don't do it.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/07/2019 18:18

There is a reason it’s cheap, nowhere to eat, nightmare to get anywhere in season, two prisons

Thanks all for your thoughts. all taken on board.

@Jungfraujoch I'm going against the grain here but I adore Portland. If you don't let the prisons put you off (which they never have for me, but I've worked with offenders) then it is a lovely area with gorgeous coastline and great water sports. I spend a lot of time there. The main negative I see is that there is a bit of an us v them local attitude and Weymouth is seen as really far away (rolls eyes). I like the walks, the marina, and if you know the area there's plenty to do (but Weymouth is close enough anyway and there's a regular bus).

You are quite likely to bump into Gary Glitter on day release. One gang I don't wanna be in ( poster of a certain age will get this pun)
