What happened to my white gloss?

I bought a 2.5L of brilliant white gloss (crown solo one coat) which I've used before with great success. Anyway, this tin was opened 2yrs ago & about 1/10th used, the lid wiped clean & secured closed well. Tonight I opened it to use & it had separated completely. There was a dark brown liquid on the surface. No worries, I got a stirring stick & patiently stirred it back to an even consistency. Whilst stirring I was inwardly laughing that it was the colour of coffee & presumed that would disappear as it got mixed - only it didn't. The paint is now perfectly mixed but it's tinted like very old paint that's yellowed. I can't use it. What happened? It was stored well, there was no rust on the lid/interior. I had a long period of ill health after using it the first time, that's how it came to be stored. I've never had this happen before. It was stored in a cupboard in our dining room, so not subject to great temperature changes like in a shed or garage.

What had previously been on your stirring stick? Something that contaminated it?

TBH I have no idea as although I store old paint pots I expect it's because the decorators would rather not dispose of it properly so leave it behind, just in case.

Stirring stick was a painters plastic stirring comb - new

I think it was something to do with the dark brown liquid on the top of the paint - that had separated out.
