Giving notice to landlord

We've just had our application accepted for a new build house so they reserved us a house, however it's only 3/4's finished. We have been told we'll hear back for viewings in August/September when the properties are suitable to view.

Now the current property we rent! Our landlord has asked for a month notice before moving out. When do I give this notice though if I don't even know if I'll be in the house in as soon as September, October or as late as November.

Would you give the notice to the landlord after you've been to view the new property and sorted out all the details like the same day or would you wait?.

We don't know how quick or slow it'll be from the time we view to the time we move in.

With our current place we viewed, signed a contract, gave details in the same day and were in the house within three days. That was a new build house but had one previous tenant so once they'd deep cleaned, painted and ever so kindly left us with no flooring it was ready for us to view and move in.

Sorry if it sounds like a really dumb post but I've got a lot going on at the moment with work, a new baby due in December and looking to move my head is all over the place.

What does your tenancy agreement say? That's your starting point. It's usual to give a month's notice to coincide with a rent payment period so the last day of the notice would be the day before the next rent payment would be due.

You don't want to give notice until you have exchanged, but with a new build you might be looking at exchange and completion same day. You may be looking at an overlap of the tenancy and owning the house. The good news is that this means you don't have to move in one fell swoop and have time to clean the rental, plus mortgage payments usually start a month in arrears.

Guessing this is renting through a housing association. New builds can take a lot longer than they think so don't give notice until the HA have a confirmed date. You may have to pay 2 lots of rent for a week or two so budget for that

@popcorndiva yes rent to buy through a HA. Ok that's good advice to wait until we hear a confirmed date! Yeah they want two weeks rent as a deposit but we don't know when that'll be or if it'll be at the same time/close to our last rent payment for our current house

@wowfudge so far I've only looked online to see what is under the FAQ's and they have said you need to give a months notice. I will dig my tenancy agreement out nearer the time but I'm sure it'll say the same. I pay rent at the beginning of the month so ideally I would like be in the next house just before the end of the same month so not to pay another months rent.
