New Build Rental - help

jess24x8 · 10/07/2019 22:08

We moved into a brand new build property about 2 weeks ago and it is a rental so we did not buy it. From the start we were told by our landlord that he will arrange for our bins(green and black) to be delivered to us. Today we received a text from
His assistant saying that we have to call our local council and tell them we need bins and we need to pay £87 for each bin that it is a new policy in cost cutting - the landlord can't do it, only the tenants. Surely it can't be right because when we move out we will not be taking the bins with us even though we paid for them/ Shouldn't it be the landlord's responsibility to provide these given it's his property?

Does it say anything in your tenancy agreement about it? I would be inclined to contact the council myself and see what they actually say about it. They might also be able to tell you who is responsible for getting them. Personally, I think it should be the owner of the house.

Usually with new builds you have to register for council tax then you can request the bins.

Sounds like local council red tape. Hmm You could just agree with your LL to deduct the cost of the bins from next month's rent. That way they'll belong to him.

We had an absolute nightmare getting buns when we moved into our new build. It was ridiculous and we didn't have any bins for weeks.

It was very clear on our council website who was responsible for the ordering and payment of the bins. In our case it was the builders responsibility and we as owners couldn't order or pay for any bins.

I think it's highly unlikely it will be the responsibility of a tenant.

Look on your website and if you can't find out phone the waste and recycling department at your council

Please don’t start deducting things from rent - that’s not the way to do it. The landlord is obliged to provide the correct bins for rubbish and recycling. I don’t see any reason why they can’t do this - I think a new build would only have tighter rules regarding the correct bins etc.
What ‘cost cutting’ is the assistant referring to? It may be cost cutting by the council that someone has to pay for the bins which may at some time been free. But that’s the landlords responsibility, not the tenants.
