Please help me pick a worktop

It’s such a big decision and I’m worried about getting it wrong! We are having a matt white handleless kitchen, and the floor will either be oak, oak-look porcelain tiles or something else neutral. I love the look of wooden worktops but am realistic that they will get trashed - I need something completely maintenance-free that will stand up to my unruly children and my complete inability to use coasters.

I had decided on a dark grey quartz with mirror chips because it was on special offer, looked hard wearing and I thought the chips would hide the crumbs. But now I am worried it’s just too dark and will look too “black and white” and stark. I love the look of concrete as well but it’s too high-maintenance.

I’ve spent hours and hours on Pinterest and I can’t even find a photo I like to copy. I feel like maybe I would like a lighter grey with no sparkles but would that just look a bit meh with no strong colour anywhere else? Also, are sparkly worktops cool or am I delusional?!?

Please help....

We had black with sparkly chips and it was nice but I had to dry it after wiping or it was all smeared. It’s worth getting a sample and seeing if you’d need to do this or not.
With our next house we have white and it doesn’t need drying.

I have a white gloss kitchen with an asphalt coloured quartz. Ie a medium grey. Love it. Had it a couple of years pretty low maintenance.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/07/2019 18:10

I think the dark grey quartz would be lovely. My parents chose that when they redid their kitchen and they also have white cabinets. They have lots of blue accent pieces placed around and it looks fabulous.

Neolith in the concrete colour way.

Lindtnotlint · 10/07/2019 19:08

It’s actually called cement.

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 10/07/2019 19:25

Mine is similar to that cement colour. Love it ! My sister has a black granite worktop. Awful! Shows all the smears.

PersisFord · 10/07/2019 19:34

Oh crikey I hadn’t thought about having to dry it!! That is definitely out of the question!

I’m glad you are all on board with the grey worktop. That Neolith is lush and I basically love all of the greys on that page. It looks PRICEY though. Our budget for all of the worktops is about £3k, which will just stretch to cheap quartz. The island is 2m long and there are about 4m around the edge. If necessary I would put something pretty on the island and have a cheap worktop round the edge but ideally I think I would have it all the same...

In crystal chrome

quartz does smear but by god its durable and takes hot pans being plonked on it and things being dropped on it without causing any damage

Aquamarine1029 · 10/07/2019 20:20

No matter what you pick, every type of surface needs a bit of attention in one way or another. There's no perfect answer.

Lindtnotlint · 10/07/2019 20:25

You are right Neolith is not a cheap option, it came up about the same as the more expensive quartz for us. By the way, for those tempted to splurge, it is completely and utterly heat proof and scratch proof.... Smile

PersisFord · 10/07/2019 20:47

Don’t tempt me!!!! This budget is TIGHT!!!

Perhaps we could live with no appliances and save there?! Grin

I guess I would rather wipe up smears than oil wood worktops then ABSOLUTELY FLIP if someone puts a cup of coffee down on them

OP posts:
PersisFord · 10/07/2019 20:51

Colour wise would it be reasonable to go for a lighter grey?

I have black granite in a holiday home and just wiping it down is sufficient! It’s low maintenance and 10 years worth of holidaymakers and film crews haven’t trashed it!

At home I have “pepper white” granite from stoneworld. “Kashmir” also looks great. I quite like flecked granite and it certainly doesn’t show marks or mess! It’s brilliant.

BubblesBuddy · 10/07/2019 21:30

I never ever put Le Crueset or similar on any worktop straight from the oven. I always protect the worktop. It was expensive and means a lot to me. Other then not using knives on it, what else could you do to?

Linguaphile · 10/07/2019 21:32

I have matt white handleless with oak floors! We went for marble effect quartz. I love it—there’s enough interest to hide all sorts of crumbs and it’s also light and bright.

PersisFord · 10/07/2019 21:34

That’s very pretty!

OP posts:
Plural · 10/07/2019 21:38

My kitchen is exactly the same as @Linguaphile!!
White Matt handleless oak type floors and marble type quartz's

PersisFord · 10/07/2019 21:44

See, that’s more the look I like, and I think the darker grey worktop will make it more stark and also more 80s

OP posts:
PersisFord · 10/07/2019 21:45

I think I want a lighter worktop. Thanks guys! The pepper white is lovely...

OP posts:
PersisFord · 10/07/2019 21:48

Would light grey be ok though? Rather than the creamy beige?

OP posts:
LetItGoHome · 10/07/2019 22:07

I'd go with the fossil grey out of the ones you have linked to. I think your right that the darker worktop might look dated. The previous posters pale palette looks gorgeous x

PersisFord · 10/07/2019 22:12

Yes, loving the light palette!!
