Replacing internal doors, with similar or not?

We have a 1930's house with the original doors. They are knackered and don't fit/can't close/no fittings to close them. They're rubbish.
We have a carpenter coming around to quote to have new ones replaced and fitted.
Should be get replacements in the same original style or go modern? Will replacing them with the original style but new doors look rubbish? Or should we go modern.
I'm not great at interiors!

Whatever you like! I love 1930s doors but it's completely upto you with what you like and want

Personally I love that our house has the original doors (even though they aren't perfect anymore) but it's all down to your own taste. I couldn't stand new ones but that's just me. What do you want?

SarahBeeney · 09/07/2019 12:17

I think perhaps the similar style but new and working!

I love original doors - could you have the current ones rehung and new hardware fitted?

I want to change our dark wood 1970's doors but I've been getting conflicting advice about modern ones. Can anyone help?

I fancy oak (-look) doors but one guy said not to get them as I'd have to varnish/treat them. He recommended white ones but said I'd have to paint them. So what's the difference in terms of work?

I have one set of double doors & fancied bi-fold doors to minimize the space they need to open/be open. Every door fitter I've spoken to says not to get them because they're a pain. Any experience of them?

I need new carpets, too. Which should be done first? If I put in new doors, I don't want the carpet fitters taking lumps out of them. But if I fit new carpets, I don't want sawdust & paint or varnish all over them. Help!

doors are very simple and can br repaired.

Or you could get modern ones in a similar style.

If you insist on modern dors, get solid core ones. They will reduce sound transmission more than cheap lightweight doors.

Consider having the door linings ("frames") replaced as well. They are relatively inexpensive and it will avoid all the blame-shifting when the new doors don''t fit right and he tells you the old linings aren't square.

I have thick fire doors in a 6-panel style because I like them, they are substantial and fairely soundproof. Even on rooms that are not required to have fire doors.

We had our 112 year old doors stripped, I've hopefully attached a before and after photo!

as for the carpets, if you have the doors fitted on lift-off hinges, you can lift them off before the carpet-fitters arrive, and have the carpenter come back and trim them afterwards.

Or, the more modern approach, is to have a hardwood threshold fitted with the frame, about the same thickness as your future carpet and underlay will be, when the door is installed. The carpenter will fit the door to this, and the door will then skim over the carpet when it arrives.

I'd always try and replace like for like where possible.
Wish we had the original doors on our 1930s house. Instead they've been replaced with hideous 1970s dark wood doors with swirly glass panels and brass handle ware. Can only afford to renovate them but would prefer to have original 1930s any day.

Me too

Funny thing, "original" features can always look correct, but "modernisations" soon look old fashioned.

The same can apply to fake works of art. The faker is unconciously filled with the styles and influences of his own time.

It's very easy to find free/cheap 1930s internal doors on Facebook, eBay, gumtree etc.
The cost is in the transport and fitting .

SarahBeeney · 10/07/2019 00:13

All the doors are original, and I had them dipped/stripped when I moved in 15 years ago. The previous owners filled in all the innards and the frames are glossed up to the max!

I'll see what the joiner says on Thursday.

Do you want a replacement mortice sashlock to fit the old hole? It's probably available but you need to measure very accurately.

Depth, width and backset.

I don't know what the original handles would have been. Probably a lever lockset on a plate, in chrome or bakelite. There might be a shadow mark of the original.

The backset (distance from edge of door to spindle hole) looks to me too small to fit a knob, you will scrape your knuckles when gripping it.

SarahBeeney · 30/07/2019 21:05

Hi @PigletJohn. Two of our doors do have the backplate and the other 4 are just filled in/wrecked! I think we will replace them all and I'll stick these on eBay.
