What is the nicest/ best looking flooring for downstairs? I am thinking wood but any advice on a brand. Also any pictures so I can get ideas of colour and style etc.

I have got a little overwhelmed on the subject and actually don’t know what actually is stylish and actually looks nice.

Most online companies send samples (usually free)...
or you could go and look at a flooring showroom...
My preference is engineered oak but can't face the idea of cutting and laying it. Previous owners had oak effect laminate and we've labelled and stacked it (had to remove for a rewire) and I'm feeling lazy and might use that ...

We’re going for engineered oak parquet but no idea who to buy from and we’ve had a fair few samples sent!

For inspiration, have a look on Houzz or visit a couple of showrooms etc.

We went for LVT in the new extension and will extend it into snug area and probably hall. Might get tiles in the new shower room. We currently have original flooring in some rooms and in comparison LVt is quiet, warm, soft on the feet so I really like it. Dog also loves it!

Karndean is lovely

We're picking flooring at the moment and after researching the different wood style floors we settled on LVT (probably Karndean). Its waterproof for by a sink, warm underfoot and doesn't require the maintenance of wood or engineered wood.

The quote for fitting it might make me second guess myself though! Blush

LVT is great for practicalities. The only downside of LVT is that it looks cheap and plastic-y.

I work in a builders merchants selling flooring so!
Don’t go for solid wood, the upkeep and movement of the boards makes it high maintenance (altho looks lovely). A very decent alternative would be engineered hardwood flooring (we sell Atkinson and Kirby, which comes under the archwood banner, and very rarely get any complaints) but you have to bear in mind that it’s not the most practical for kitchens as it’s not waterproof and definitely isn’t for bathrooms where it would get damp, and affected by the moisture in the air.
We also sell LVT, from unilin (quick steps), which is getting increasingly popular. It’s a warmer product underfoot and is, of course, completely waterproof. The vinyl we sell actually looks really good, and you can get anything from a smooth finish to a decent wood grain effect so can look really convincingly realistic.

If I were you, I would pop to a builders merchants and just have a look, they should have sample boards but maybe ring ahead to make sure. You get a better feel for the products then.
Ps don’t skimp on the underlay and while vinyl is super easy to lay, if you’re not a keen DIYer, get someone in to do it for you and take the hassle out of it!
