Purple paint........... how to do it nicely?

DD, 4yo, has asked for 'a purple bedroom'. (We are redecorating so this isn't random.) We have no plans to move soon and she's had a tough time recently so am fine with giving her what she wants.

Trouble is, she has the box room. It's an okay-sized box room but nonetheless. I've looked online for inspiration but most things I can find on Pinterest etc seem to have large spaces.

I am thinking: either one purple feature wall and the other walls/ ceiling in a warm cream OR maybe cream walls and all the skirting, door etc done in a bolder purple? I know it sounds horrid but I was in a house recently where they had done the woodwork throughout in bright colours and it actually kinda worked.

Any thoughts?

Id maybe do pale lilac walls but strong purple curtains and bedding.

isseywithcats · 08/07/2019 16:38

i too would go pale walls and have accessories like curtains and bedding in purple because when she five she may say dont like purple any more and accessories are easier to replace with another colour

Stuckforthefourthtime · 08/07/2019 16:44

Pale walls and purple items or curtains. It's hard to get right, a pain to paint over, and not at all desirable if you're ever looking to sell...

BlueflowerRedthorns · 08/07/2019 16:56

I would let her choose the colour she likes, it's only paint. If you ever move then just paint it white then.

BlueflowerRedthorns · 08/07/2019 16:58

Sorry to answer your question, if it's strong purple she likes I'd do 1 or 2 walls, if it's more lilac then I'd do them all.

PivotPivotPivottt · 08/07/2019 17:00

My daughter only has a small room and wanted purple. I just let her choose what she liked so she has 3 walls with Wilko Wild Orchid and one wall has wallpaper. Painted all the woodwork white she loves it and so do I.

AwkwardPaws27 · 08/07/2019 17:07

I had a purple feature wall as a teen, other walls and woodwork were crisp white. Looked great. Purple lampshade and fluffy rug too!

Anotherbloodyname123 · 08/07/2019 17:14

Choose three purple/lilac paints you can tolerate and let her choose the one she likes best.

Just go for it - feature walls look a bit naff.

Anotherbloodyname123 · 08/07/2019 17:16

Or a floral wallpaper with purple flowers. Again, all walls.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 08/07/2019 18:57

Agree feature walls are naff but she is 4, tbf! Her taste in interior design may well develop........

I think I will give her the option of all her walls in 'light purple' or one wall in 'dark purple' and see what she says.

Her curtains are currently white with yellow and purple stars and was hoping not to change them.........

Thanks all!

Pivot does your DD room look really dark though? That is my fear.

Frankly not bothered about selling as not going to happen for us for years, and if it does I'll buy a tin of magnolia and spend half a day sorting it.

F&B Calluna is gorgeous, steer her towards that and do everything (wood and walls) in it.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 08/07/2019 19:23

Coukd tou give her a pretty purple wall paper? Then paint the other walls lilac. Bright purple will look naff, shell hate it in a couple of years, but a classy shade of purple with a nice funky feature wall could look Brill!

MusterTheRohirim · 08/07/2019 19:27

I have Dulux Dusted Fondant in my lounge. It looks purple without being too dark. I would have my whole house purple if it was down to me!!

notmylittleangel · 08/07/2019 19:54

Purple carpet plain walls? Small room shouldn't cost the earth to carpet in an off cut.
Then match the curtains and bedding etc

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 08/07/2019 19:59

Thanks! I liked a couple of Dulux colours -- Gentle Lavender and Dusted Fondant were two of them. Also possibly Purple Pout for a feature wall?

I think I am just going to paint. Surely just painting walls is way less hassle and expense than recarpeting and buying all new curtains etc?

A tin of Dulux is about £35 so one for the walls and one for woodwork would work out at well under a hundred pounds......Surely new carpet and curtains would be a lot more?

I don't think it looks dark. Here's the colour in natural daylight before the wallpaper went up. The other photo the blinds are closed so not as much natural light. Probably not to everyone's taste but that's what she chose and like your daughter has also had a difficult year so I just let her do what she wanted!

SeekingShade · 09/07/2019 07:40

I think a lightish greyed purple could look really nice. I'd choose something that looks too grey on the chart as the purpleness will intensify when you do the whole room. Something like f&b calluna

Pinkyyy · 09/07/2019 07:50

Have you heard of peel and stick removable wallpaper OP? It's become extremely popular because you can put it up and take it down extremely easily, so if she changes her mind after a while, it will be an easy swap.
