Low ceilings? Deal breaker?

SlowMoFuckingToes · 07/07/2019 10:24

Looking at houses and have found a few that fit our budget and have the garden size we want but come with low ceilings as in 6 footish. Anyone live with low ceilings and find it a bit oppressive?

Low ceilings are one thing, but six feet is extremely low! There will be many people who won’t be able to walk in your house without stooping. It would be a deal breaker for me.

JoJoSM2 · 07/07/2019 10:50

We're tall so wouldn't even be able to stand up in a house like that...

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 07/07/2019 11:02

I've never even seen a house with 6 feet ceiling. Maybe a 200 year old cottage, but normal house?

MaybeitsMaybelline · 07/07/2019 11:09

Most doorways are eight foot so I would question a six foot ceiling!

SlowMoFuckingToes · 07/07/2019 11:23

It's a very old cottage. I'm 5'6 and I had to duck through one doorway. This isn't the first house that we've seen like this. Doorways are not 8 foot as a standard....

In very old cottages low ceilings are common. People were shorter few hundred years ago. I saw on tv that people dig the floors up and lower them to add a head space.

longearedbat · 07/07/2019 12:31

Do you mean there are some low areas/beams? It would be very strange for nothing to be higher than 6 foot. It would be an almost uninhabitable hobbit house!
I am 5'4" and in my previous house (built 1750) I had to duck to get up the stairs, but that was all part of the character. I always reminded people about the low bits, but they just as often forgot and hit their heads.

GiantKitten · 07/07/2019 12:42

Standard ‘modern’(ie Victorian onwards) internal doors are between 6’3 & 6’6 IME.

6’ ceilings would feel really oppressive, & the doors would be even lower!

Squirreltamer · 07/07/2019 12:43

Standard door height is 6”6. 6”8 in a generous house.

Standard ceiling height in a modern house is 240cm which is the same height as a plasterboard sheet... lazy builders..
You can add on a foot or two for Victorian and Edwardian properties and take off a foot for pre Victorian cottages.

In answer 100% yes a ceiling and door ways an average person would have to duck would be an instant no for me. But I do like a standard triangle loft space over a dorma and I love a quirky staircase. But if the majority is ducking 100% no.

isseywithcats · 07/07/2019 13:01

My OH wouldnt even be able to walk around as hes 6Ft 4 so no i couldnt live in a house with low ceilings

flirtygirl · 07/07/2019 13:36

I would never buy anything or even rent anywhere with ceilings less than 240cm.

This is my top thing on looking at a house, next thing is bedroom size.

Low ceilings are awful, some modern houses are 230cm, why do this?

At least in a period cottage, there was a reason and the character features offsets the ceiling. In a modern house or flat what is the reason?

MeanMrMustardSeed · 07/07/2019 13:39

Definite dealbreaker

I think it's the other way round!!!Grin Ceilings were standardised as 8 foot (244cm) by the 20s well before plasterboard was even invented. That is the reason that when they invented sheet materials the most popular dimensions are 8 foot by 4 foot. But you can still get 10 foot plasterboard for older houses where the standard was higher ceilings.

loveskaka · 07/07/2019 14:04

Are all the ceilings Low? Some look higher

dancingcamper · 07/07/2019 14:09

That looks quite oppressive - would be nicer if they had left visible beams for a bit more space. I am just thinking I'll never be able to sell my house as people are getting taller and it's a tiny cottage.

DustyDoorframes · 07/07/2019 15:43

Unless they have oddly short furniture that doesn't look like 6 feet!

HopelessLayout · 07/07/2019 15:49

Ground floor looks fine and definitely higher than 6ft.
The one large bedroom in particular looks low but you could use that for storage perhaps?

SlowMoFuckingToes · 07/07/2019 16:59

They've used a very wide angle lens. The entry way is 6 feet. The sitting room is six feet. The kitchen is higher. Upstairs is actually better.

It says sold now... to you? It's gorgeous and everyone on this thread would hate my house Grin it's a cottage aged 500 years old in parts. DH is 5ft7 and one of the beams in the dining room lets him know when he needs a haircut! We also have doors to duck through.
That house isn't oppressive at all!
