Feeling a bit overwhelmed

Gulp. We are paying off our mortgage at the end of the year and are finally getting down to a whole bunch of jobs on the house we've parked for finance reasons.

Some are biggish (new bathroom, new windows), some are fairly small (proper garden clearance and replacing the shed).

A fair few will all link together - like we need some plastering done so we can then move dds into their own bedrooms which need complete redoing top to toe including carpets which I then want doing throughout the house......

I have crappy design ability as does dh. We know what we like (uncluttered, plain, airy) but we fail to translate this into reality. My neutral carpets just look like they came (cheaply) from the 80s for example. Dh is also practical to a fault and won't listen god love him so things can be a battle.

I want our house to look nice, be in good repair and be practical. I've been waiting to do this work on it for ages and I want it to go well.

Where do I start! Windows and bathroom are the focus this year I think but other than picking up a couple of brochures from the local bathroom company yesterday, I'm stuck!

I would start with your budget for each job. It's no good having 'grand design' type ideas but not being able to finance them. For ideas there are plenty of places to browse on the Internet. Also, shop around. It's amazing how much you can save. Personally I would avoid the big bathroom companies because they charge so much.
As for style, well, it's a very personal thing, isn't it? Don't worry too much about being stylish or on trend. Go with what you like and what works for you. I would always put comfort and ease of maintenance/cleaning over style. For example, we had a new kitchen a few years ago and I loved the solid wood worktops. Then I found out what high maintenance they are and how easily they mark, so that idea was chucked.
