Looking for a locksmith who can copy old keys

We've got a load of old keys, but only one per lock. So I'm looking for someone who can make copies to hold in case of loss. They don't have to look old, but be workable copies in case of emergency. Can anyone recommend someone?

Any good old fashioned locksmith would be able to do this we have at least two in my town. If you are in Berkshire I can recommend Toomers in Newbury.

A proper locksmith. We had replacement keys made for a cabinet after they'd been lost.

How old?

The locks are Georgian. The usual locksmiths I've approached can't do that as the size of them requires hand cutting, but using their clever laser machines.

is there a traditional old locksmith in your town?

Not a heel bar or hardware store. not a "24-hour emergency callout" number. The sort of place that has someone who can open safes. They become fascinated with the trade and often have lots of old curiosities.

If you can't find anybody, you could post a query on

If it's an internal door, it is not likely to be by a major maker, unless your house is very grand, and the key may be a simple one.

post a photo of the key and the lock (fore-end at least) in case it sparks other ideas.

Here is a trade association

And here is an example of a traditional locksmith, now retired, as an example, but there are still some around.

I got some interesting items from an old London family firm that closed down and slowly cleared out their stock.

You haven't said where you are, so no-one can suggest a local business.
