We will never get a house

Long story short, dad brother and I live in a house we can’t afford the rent on. I won’t say why but it is due to a tragic reason as to why we are financially struggling. My grandfather has stepped in and helped. We are on the housing list in Somerset. We are on gold band for many months were on silver when really should of been on gold but anyway. Today we have found out we can’t be considered for yarlington which is the main housing provider in our area due to rent arrears. How are we ever going to get a house? Surely all of them will have the same reasoning. I can see us having bailiffs then ending on the street. I can’t see us ever getting anywhere.

It says on their policy (link below) that in extenuating circumstances including situations in which a schedule of repayment has been agreed and has been adhered to for a reasonable period of time the Lettings Team Leader, may waive this restriction at their discretion.

So if you can agree to some kind of repayment plan then you might be able to be considered.

If you have been served a notice seeking possession then you will be"threatened with homelessness" so you can contact your council and make a homelessness application. You will be owed the prevention duty at this stage and the local waiting list policy will usually allow people on the list despite arrears in these circumstances.

You can ask to see their allocations policy to check this or search for it online.

You can still make a homeless application if the property is genuinely unaffordable (the council will assess this but it means if you cant afford to eat or heat after paying your rent) then you can be considered homeless and therefore allowed on the list.

-or depending on your household income you can apply for housing costs (UC)- if you are already in receipt of housing costs(UC) or housing benefit - you can apply for a discretionary housing payment which can top up the rent for you.

Google discretionary housing payment and your local council name and that should take you the the page where you can apply.
Good luck OP.
