Creosote disposal

Just clearing out my old garden shed, and I've found a 4 litre tub of creosote from yonks ago. How should I dispose of this? I realise creosote has been banned for years so has to be got rid of safely somehow. Am I meant to take it to some kind of specialist disposal site? I'm not a driver so that would be a bit of a problem.

Thanks for any advice.

Our local council recycling site accepts it - check with yours. There's no rush to get rid, so just wait until you can get a kind volunteer to take it for you.

if it is a metal container, put it in a large bucket for now, since they rust and may leak, especially when moved. The bottom of a tin may fall out if it has been stored in a damp shed.

We still buy and use creosote. It's still available to certain industries - ours comes from our farm suppliers shop. I bet a local farmer would take it for you.

How can I dispose of a plastic container containing creosote which I didn't know was on the top shelf in my garage. My late husband must have put it there. I went into the garage to restart my CH boiler, which had been tripping out frequentliy, one morning and was greeted with a horrendous smell. I thought the boiler must have burnt out but gas engineer said not and found the container which had sprung a tiny leak in one corner. I took it to the local recycling centre who refused to take it. How can I get rid of it?
