Do you have a "statement door"?

I've been seeing this floating around lately on Pinterest and Instagram mostly and love the idea, but they all seem to be for large or period properties which are very dramatic anyway.

I'm thinking a "statement door" would look ridiculous on a terrace/semi in the commuter belt, but thought it was worth asking if anyone has one and is possible show me, or at least describe it! My house is an orange-red brick building.

I'll post some examples as well Smile

I'm not fussed about the colour, but I love the drama and vibrancy of it, as well as an interesting door knocker.

And a couple more examples!

I've also seen modern ones that I like, but they're huge and wouldn't fit.

Yes I guess I do have a 'statement door' although I wouldn't call it that. We have an Edwardian house and it's got beautiful original stained glass windows around the door (and in the door) with an arch, big knocker, stone lions etc. It was one of things I thought most beautiful about the house before we bought it, and I love watching the evening light come through the coloured glass.

ArchMemory · 28/06/2019 17:52

I’d love a door like that @Dinosauraddict! Jealous.

Our house is late 1920s and has a horrible replacement door. I’d definitely like something more in keeping when we have an opportunity to replace it.

@HardLuckWater I think a nice bright colour can look good on any kind of house. I do think it looks best if the door design is in keeping with the style and era on your house though.

Those look a bit gaudy but they're better than endless sage or stone, and far, far preferable to uPVC nastiness.

Hi all
May I suggest what we did, some muppet in the 70”s took out a probably beautiful stained glass victorian door and the glass in the surrounding frame. I found a company that made me a solid wood door with apertures for glass, found a glass company (couldn’t afford the stained ) so did etched.
It all looks 1000 times better
But having a hell of a job getting our painter back to finish off !

One of those photos is very like my door. I had to look closely to make sure it wasn’t actually mine.

Inniu

Ooooh which one?!

Yeah, current door is white uPVC. I hate it.

I wouldn't go too bright. Our new front door is a navy composite door with chrome knocker, handle and letterbox.
I also liked the look of deep purple and red but went with navy in the end.

DustyDoorframes · 28/06/2019 19:39

How old is your house OP? That will dictate the style of door, I'd have thought.

Peachi82 · 28/06/2019 21:11

We are ditching the ugly UPVC door soon and get a nice composite door in blue, it's already on order and I'm more excited than I should be! In a street full of white doors it will definitely stand out (that's not why we picked blue. We photoshopped different doors on our house and the blue looked lovely).

babysharkah · 28/06/2019 21:13

I think by this photos yes I do. Edwardian terrace, original glass panelled door and its lavender. I love it. Didn't know it had a name though!

namechangedyetagain · 28/06/2019 21:17

I'd love a new front door but according to our deeds are not allowed for another 4 years.

How could you use photoshop to find a lovely door?

I saw a beautiful door on holiday on an old house by the sea and I'd love that on my 3 bed semi

exexpat · 28/06/2019 21:19

I guess our door makes a statement: it is bright yellow, much the same as the last one of your pics. The house is a Victorian semi with the original door, which had been painted a dingy, peeling dark green. The door is down the side of the house, and is nearly always in shadow, so the yellow made a huge difference in cheerfulness.

I keep thinking about having hanging baskets to add to the effect but I have a feeling they would not thrive in the shade.

CatkinToadflax · 29/06/2019 08:47

We recently replaced the nasty white uPVC door on our 1930s house with a beautiful composite door from Solidor in duck egg blue. We used the function on the Solidor website to ‘design’ it ourselves, so we chose the style of door we wanted, the specific etched glass in the window panels, the chrome door knob and knocker etc. It looks beautiful compared with its scruffy uPVC predecessor.

I’m envious of the PP with the stained glass....my grandmother had a stunning solid oak front door with the most beautiful stained glass panels. Stained glass always makes me think of her.

TiddleTaddleTat · 29/06/2019 09:18

People who have these lovely statement doors - what do you do if you have a porch?
Is the colourful door on the front of the porch or is it the internal door to the house?

Mehmum · 29/06/2019 09:27

Those photos look like they’re taken from a poster called “Georgian Doors” which featured lots of interesting architectural doors around the British Isles.

Pipandmum · 29/06/2019 09:31

If you can’t change your door you could have a statement knocker. Mines a whales tail I got from the US. Everyone who comes to the door mentions it.

HardLuckWater · 29/06/2019 13:49

I definitely want an interesting knocker as well!

I was thinking something linked to the local area. I used to live in Richmond so I had a stag as a nod to the park. The new house is a far cry from Richmond, so I need to get to know the area and what would be a nice link. There are lots of "rose" type names nearby so perhaps that, but I haven't seen a rose knocker that I like yet.
