Ist floor utility room ?

I live in a 3 storey house with the washer in the kitchen (ground floor) and a condenser dryer on the 3rd floor because of space issues. I also have clothes airers/ironing board etc up there. I have no outside hanging space.
I've always thought the 1st floor is a more logical place for a utility room (in any house) as most laundry is generated on that floor and returns to there. When DD moves out next month how easy would it be to plumb the washing machine into her old bedroom ? It's next to the bathroom.

You want a washing machine in a bedroom? Never would do that! Utterly ugly! You need water and a waste pipe connected to the drainage system so not cheap. Can you not make a cupboard in a bathroom, plumb it in there and hide it? Or get it plumbed in with the dryer? Where is that? In another bedroom?

I’ve never really worried about taking laundry upstairs and I use my laundry room on the ground floor for all sorts of storage and it has a big hand wash sink and drainer too plus a tall radiator and drying rails.

I have a small kitchen and a living room on the ground floor.
The room on the first floor has been a sewing/craft room, and a bedroom. It would just become a utilty room.

We had our bathroom redone earlier this year and moved the washing machine and dryer up. It’s so much better.

Yes I still have to bring washing down to put it on the line but for the majority of the time when it’s raining (Cornwall Wink) I put the dirty washing in from the basket in the bathroom then carry it across the landing yo sort on my bed...

It's my dream to have a laundry room on the first floor! I'd only have it as a separate room though, draw the line at putting a washing machine into a bedroom.

Excellent idea! If you can loose the bedroom then it will make life a lot easier for you. It won’t be difficult to plumb it in if bathroom is right next door. My washer and dryer is in the kitchen and therefore so is a huge amount of laundry!

Our utility room is on the same floor as the bedrooms and it works really well.

I have a utility room on the first floor. Its awesome!

I wouldn't just plumb a washing machine into a bedroom though..

I like my bathroom to be a bathroom. Not a utility room. Could you form a laundry cupboard on the first floor by taking some of the bedroom and making it a laundry cupboard that opens onto the landing? That would make sense. Or make a laundry cupboard in the bedroom so the machines are behind closed doors?

We converted an old tiny bathroom on the first floor into a laundry room. It’s my favourite room in the house! So useful.

We moved the boiler and washing machine up to a utility on the 1st floor when the old boiler blew and we wanted to redo the kitchen. It's ace, wouldn't go back.

We were lucky* to have an appropriate spare room of course.

  • we planned it when we were buying the house 15 years before!

I have a lot of American friends and family with big lovely houses and they all have the laundry room off the first floor landing. It makes so much more sense!

When we refurbished our house, we initially had the laundry room on the first floor. Unfortunately, we needed to move it as the whole house shook when the washing machine was on. Mind you, ours is a 20's house so not sure if the joists are particularly wimpy or not.
It works well for my sister but she's got a modern house with concrete floors so nothing shakes.

I knew it made sense ! Thanks all
