Mezzanine in small bedroom

PanannyPanoo · 25/06/2019 17:50

I live in a 3 bed semi. 2 large double bedrooms and 1 small single.

We can't move. We can't extend.

I am wondering about the possibility of utsilising some of the loft space above the stairs and landing to create a Mezzanine level for the smallest bedroom so that our son can have more space. All of the images I can find are of loft style apartments or huge rooms with a mezzanine bedrom.

Has anyone done anything similar?

It'll probably cost nearly as much as a loft conversion. Why not do a loft extension / conversion?

How many DC do you have?

2 children.

The loft is a few cm to low to convert without having a dormer.

We use the loft for storage - (Christmas presents for children in hospital, so used all year round).
My thinking is if we use part of the loft as a Mezzanine I could have a proper door into the storage area and a better, permenant ladder, as well as giving our son somewhere to play and store his toys.
I would keep his bed in his current room, rather than put it on the platform.

Is it not cheaper and easier to move the wall between the single and double to make the single bigger?

Seen it done lots of times and works well.

There was a family on a channel 4 home show (one with George) that did this quite cheaply for their children's rooms. I've always wanted to do this.

It's usually a case of removing the ceiling, fireproof boarding and plastering the newly created part after creating a stud wall and insulating the roof.

There are some smaller rooms on Google images but hard to find. You would need building regs. You also need a built in way or ladder to access the mezzanine.

It leaves the rest of your loft for storage so it's a good idea.
If you can find labour cheaply and buy in your own materials, then you can control the costs better.

Ooh thanks flirtygirl I will have a search - I would rather create more space than reconfigure what we have. Both ways will mean lots of money, upheaval and decoration, be nice if we end up with more at the end of it!
