Working open fire with no fire surround or tiles.

Exchanged yesterday(!) and the new house has a working open fire. The house is 1920s but the whole fire surround and any tiles have been removed. It is just an open hole with a metal fire basket.

Will this be OK? All the open fires I've lived with before had tiled openings. Does the paint get discoloured/scorched?

Has it got a hearth?

You need to have it surveyed before you use it, even if present occupiers say it's ok.
So many changes can happen to a house over the years, that could render it unsafe with a fire.

Get a chimney sweep in to inspect it before using.

Yep, definitely going to have it inspected first. It does have a stone? hearth.

I just wondered if anyone has a fire like this and uses it without any problems? I've googled and seen plenty in this style that appear to be used.
