Half doors into bathroom

Has anyone had this set up? Has it worked well? And where did you get them from?

We have a small second bathroom which cannot have a door opening into it...there isn’t room for a sliding door and the door can’t open out as it’s at the top of stairs. So our options are a bifold door or half doors. thinking it could be a nice feature in the French door style but don’t want it to be weird! It’s a loft conversion so nothing there currently. Thanks all!

What is a half door?

On the basis of the name itself - no, not good in to a bathroom of all rooms!

wowfudge · 22/06/2019 17:25

I think the OP means a split door which is split into two halves vertically.

If it's a loft conversion does that mean it's en suite? In which case I wouldn't have an issue with it.

We have an understairs cupboard with a vertical split door and that works fine, but it is quite noisy when it slides open/shut.

Like french doors?

I had visions of a Wild West bar style half door! Grin
(This week's hotel inspector had some!)

We had them into a small bathroom in the same situation. Worked very well and didn't cause any issues. No one really noticed....

IME the trouble with half doors is that they do not feel private or secure when you are in the bathroom. If you can solve that problem, then I don't see any reason not to use them, especially if they can be made in a style that matches the existing doors. Or you could deliberately make it look like a hall cupboard.

Not louvre doors, though. Neither for halves or bifolds. They just look cheap and allow too much noise through (and smells, too!).

Half door need to lock together and/or bolt into the door frame at the top and bottom. You can get handles that work the locking mechanism top and bottom simultaneously.

Thanks for the responses! Yes I meant 2 narrow doors that together are the same as one normal door width. It’s not an en-suite but it’s only supposed to serve one bedroom so will basically be one. I did wonder if we could put something... thin piece of wood maybe on one door on the inside to make a bit more of a seal.

Hopefullyhelpfully- where did you get yours from?

We used a pair of doors like this in our en-suite. They match the fitted wardrobes. Looks fab.

I have only ever installed one bathroom with bi fold doors and the client was never comfortable with it, personal preference I suppose. She said it doesn't feel private. On the occasion where a normal door is an issue on a job I always try to install a pocket door. Eclisse make really good ones.

We had ours made by a carpenter as the gap was also a non standard size. The carpenter made sure they joined closely and we fitted a sturdy latch to close the door. It was a really effective solution

Bouncebacker · 23/06/2019 20:56

I’m guessing it’s too late - but could you make it an en-suite? We could have had the door for our loft conversion bathroom go either into the bedroom or the landing and we chose the bedroom as the landing felt too small for a door. ( we didn’t even think of half doors - it’s not a bad plan!)

Neet90 · 26/06/2019 23:23

We have a bifold door on our bathroom, we also have it opening out onto our landing so there is a bit more room in the bathroom

We have a pivot sliding door, it's a thing of wonder!

A quick google found this so you can see what I mean. We got a carpernter to fit it and its great. Opens either way and is a standard door on a magic mechanism!
