Hi, weve just moved into a border oak house with SIPS construction. My DH is having trouble hanging things on the wall as he says he sometimes seems to find nothing behind the plaster to drill into? He cant work out how to find out where best to drill - anyone got any suggestions?

You can use those plasterboard fixings that spread the load. There's a screw-in version or one with 'wings' that clamps for a firm grip. Alternatively, if like me, you wanted to hang a very heavy mirror & there's nothing behind. Then you need to open up the plasterboard between the vertical battens & install a wooden horizontal between, then re-install the plasterboard & fill in the gaps with Polyfilla. I did this 20yrs ago & our very heavy mirror is still perfectly fine. You can locate the uprights by drilling a line of tiny holes until you hit wood, or use one of those electrical detector thingies.

Thanks for that.
