Cheapest, least work-involved downstairs WC?

Hi I'm hoping to move into a beautiful RENTED Dormer bungalow in a month (just ironing out the details) and in every way it's perfect! Except for one thing.... I have limited mobility and the toilet is upstairs! 🤦🏼‍♀️ I can manage it, but having a loo downstairs would make life a little easier. Sorry if this is TMI but I wee a lot!

However, there is a storage room next to the kitchen which is big enough to pop a toilet in. Though being rented I would of course, need the Landlord to agree to any works and paying for it becomes tricky and I obviously cannot expect the Landlord to pay etc etc.

So, I was wondering if there was a solution that wouldn't involve hundreds of pounds and a disgruntled Landlord please?

For various reasons I can't just wait for another property to come along (I'm in a tricky situation) plus I LOVE this house!!

I know social services can help with or even provide disabled living adjustments but that's not all that straight forward and I don't really want to go that far. Just hoping for a possible temporary solution until my mobility (hopefully) improves!!

Thanks

A commode?

Heratnumber7 · 21/06/2019 07:02

Easiest if it's close to the down-pipe from the upstairs toilet and close to other water in the house.
I doubt you'd get a grant for changes to a house you don't know though.

If it's just wee, can you manage with a commode?

A camping toilet.

Or speak to the landlord if the soil and water pipes are in a position that would make putting in a real too possible. It's very expensive (all the pipes, tiling, extraction fans etc) but they might be interested to improve their property especially if you offer to chip in.

I think you need to discuss this RIGHT NOW with your landlord before you've spent too much money on all the vetting checks etc. This is a crazy plan and I'd not be keen if I was the landlord. If they wanted a downstairs toilet I'm sure they have already done it.

I suppose all you can do is get a quote and ask if it's something the landlord would consider. How many bedrooms does the property have? If it's 3+ it may well add value to the property so could be a win win for the landlord, I personally won't buy a house with one toilet. But if it's already a smaller property it may bring less value and therefore less business sense for the landlord. But you can only ask, it's all about the wording, just ask if it would be something they could consider but you understand if not. It'll depend what value the blank space currently has as well of course. It is a bit of a leap though so I do think you should consider whether the property is appropriate. I really don't understand the naming of dorma "bungalows" if it has stairs it's a house!

I (not having grown up in the UK) had always thought a "dormer bungalow" implied it was built as a bungalow and then had a loft conversion. So I would have expected that there was still a downstairs bathroom, or at the very least a downstairs toilet.

From what you describe I am guessing that maybe it. was always built that way. But, perhaps they really did convert it to upstairs toilet only - in which case possibly the plumbing from an original toilet is still partly there, which could reduce costs of reinstating it signficantly if practical.

A commode would probably be the best idea short term. You could empty it down the sink or an outside drain or even use cat litter to soak any liquid up and empty it in the bin.

I'd doubt very much that the landlord will install a loo for a brand new renter.

I have just been sick......

I have now passed out......

Never had a dirty nappy? Ever been camping? Christ I'd hate to see what you'd do if you were ever caught short.

I once peed in a loose box. Farm in the middle of nowhere, no loo apart from in 5hr main house which was locked up. I peed. Everyone lived happily ever after.

Tattypoo · 22/06/2019 22:20

If it's relatively temporary you could get a portable chemical loo
