Does anyone know about CAT 6 Cabling?

We're having major renovations done and as all the spaces are being opened up anyway, I was thinking of having a cable run down from my broadband to where the telly will be downstairs.

What I am unsure of is whether it would be worth having it in my study too - the broadband box will be in my study anyway, so would it not be easier for me to just buy an ether net cable to connect my computer directly to my broadband box?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I've heard of Cat 6 cables, but just not sure how exactly it might work if my computer is next to the broadband box anyway.

Thanks in advance for any answers!

We did this. TV room in the basement, Ethernet cables to the sky box in the lounge above. I believe DH had the Cat 6 cables put in every bedroom too, for 'future proofing' 😬

Sorry, not clear, our broadband comes in at the basement

Ethernet cables carry the internet round your house from the box to whatever needs it. There are various categories of cables. Including cat5 and cat6.

Your normal one you use to connect the box to a PC, that's probably thin, grey and about 1m long is almost certainly cat5.

CAT6 is just a beefier cable than your usual kind and thus is good for long runs, like to other rooms of a house.

I didn't directly answer the question!

Yes, it's a good idea to run cat6 cable to the tv.

No, there's no point using cat6 cable for a trivial distance from the box to your computer. Unless you want to embed all the wires in the wall and the router boxed in somewhere in the ceiling or such like so that hardly anything is visible. It seems that's not a thing for you so just use a normal cat5 cable or wifi between box and laptop.

I don’t know a huge amount about CAT6 but we are putting it everywhere in our renovation. We’ve already found several things it will be useful for:

  • we will be able to use the cat6 to create a much better wifi network within our house, with no dead spots (crucial since we now have lots of steel that blocks the signal)
  • we will be able to watch tv recorded on our “master” freeview+ box on a different tv (so like multiroom sky but without sky)
  • Sonos speakers will plug into cat6, I don’t know why exactly but apparently it’s good!

I think in the future there will be more and more need for data cabling as wifi will not cope with things like HD video and tv

Thanks for your advice everyone!
Will just buy a cable to run between my broadband box and computer in the study then!

You will want a cable between wherever your modem/router is going to be and the tv. And another one between wherever your modem/router is going to be and the computer in the study. And a third one between your gamer ds' (if you have one or are likely to have one) bedroom and the modem/router.

Do not run the cat 6 next to electrical wires...they will interfere.

@SofiaAmes - thanks for the tip re: not running the cat 6 next to electrical wires. Star
