Neighbours waste pipe on my land

So our extension started and we quickly realised that the neighbour's waste pipe was in the way - their manhole cover sat on the boundary line. They allowed us to move this so it now sits on their land.

However...

The rest of their pipe runs under our current boiler room and garage then runs back onto their front garden where there is another manhole.

Due to the close proximity of their pipe to the edge of our garage wall and the fact that our boiler room is being extended and the boiler room and garage is being built on, the pipe needs to be moved so it isn't crushed with the weight. The neighbours won't agree to the pipe being moved onto their land which means the pipe needs to be moved under ours and a new manhole cover put in our drive to allow the pipe to be moved and then hooked back into where their manhole cover is.

Will this cause any problems in the future? Should we get any agreements signed up? Should they pay for being in our property? Do we need to sort any legalities out? Or when their drain gets blocked can I just say tough (literally) shit?! Our trailer tent is always going to be parked over the manhole cover and if it isn't there, our second car will be.

Can I be awkward forever more? This is the end of a line of awkwardness from them so I am pissed off now and will not be paying for their Sky dish to be moved!

I'm surprised all this wasn't picked up (and negotiated) before the build started.
Your extension is nothing to do with them, and they are not obliged to accomodate you in any way, yet you are wondering if you should charge them for having their pipework over your property, which wouldn't happen if you weren't building an extension in the first place. You should be doing everything in your power to either keep them sweet, or find another solution. I would be mightily pissed off if my neighbours started building on their property and then started making all sorts of demands about my drainage systems and all the associated upheaval with moving them around.

Hold on. What’s the neighbor’s pipe doing on OP’s land in first place. Surely one has the right to do whatever they want on their ‘own land’.

I would say if neighbours dont agree to change it, they dont really care abt OP’s feelings. So why should she be considerate?

We didn't actually have to move the drain pipe. We could have just built over it, the manhole cover would just have been closer to our wall.

We had it moved (at their request and agreement before the build started) so if they had a problem then they had clear access to it.

When the builders dug down it was noticed that their drain pipe actually runs under our wall and alongside the full length of the garage before going back into their garden (to a manhole) and then into the street.

My thoughts were that their pipe shouldn't be under my house in the first place. Now I know they don't want it running on their side my question was that if we move their drain so my house doesn't crush their pipe as (and put in the required manhole on my drive) do I have to provide access if their drain blocks? Do we need an easement put in on the deeds. Presumably if we (or they) move in the future there needs to be a record that their house may need access.

Genuine question - how is it their fault that their pipe is on their land? Assuming there properties were built way before either of you moved in so nothing to do with either you? It's only become a problem because of your building work?

I think it's poor to be asking if it's ok to be awkward to your neighbour's 'forever more' because you're pissed off you're not getting things your way? You're coming across as very spiteful.

*isn't on their land

Assuming you live in the UK, no they don't.

Drainage pipes crossing neighbouring land is common.

It’s totally normal to have neighbour drainage pipes crossing your land.

Why are you being such a dick about it “I’m going to park my trailer over the man hole and be really ackward forever” - seriously? Don’t be like this!

It’s you doing the building works and you are going to have to solve the pipe problem.

This is a very normal problem to find when doing an extension.

No you cant do what you like with it unfortunately.. the houses were built that way and you cant force someone to have a pipe put on their land. Same goes for water pipes. Very common in the UK for both to cross lands with neighbours
