So people sitting on stools are in the way of the door? Not great.

IneedKirstieandPhil · 12/06/2019 18:08

There’s a door the other side too (opposite wall from hallway which will get more used back door will just be for taking rubbish out I suppose as there’s a conservatory off the dining part (not shown in pic)

Loooks nice but few question marks around practicality. And whether it’s the most efficient use of space

My parents have a similar set up and it's useless as a breakfast bar, they gave up and got rid of the stools.

Can you have the door where the window is at the end of the room and have a window where the door is? That would really help. Otherwise I definitely wouldn’t go with that design. I never really like breakfast bars right next to a dining table. What’s the point? Just sit at the table.

wheresmyliveship · 12/06/2019 18:38

I would think that as you have the dining table so close, you may not need the breakfast bar. I’d put shelving or something there - either a wine rack or cookbook shelves!

I like it. I can imagine the kids sitting there for breakfast when you are making packed lunches. Or friends sitting while you are cooking for them. I get points about not being able to use it when door is open - so think about the stools you buy and where you will store them if they don't tuck under.

I like it too. Mine is the other way round is close to the inner door that leads you to the corridor

We could lose the door and plaster over but I think I want the light from the garden plus don’t want to cart bin bags through conservatory. We use our breakfast bar in current house a lot

I like it, my friends have v similar, we sit and chat when we go for Sunday lunch, kids sit there for breakfast etc. The door is opened only when rubbish going out or it's too hot just make sure the handle/ hinges are the right way round so you're not opening the door into anyone.

Bumblenut · 13/06/2019 19:47

If it’s not a door that you use often then I think it’s fine.

Very different purposes for breakfast bar compared to dining table.

I'm just about to have a breakfast bar but where your door is I've changed it to a floor to ceiling window. If you have an alternate door what about doing that. I'm loving the wow factor and it's not finished yet. When sat at the breakfast bar will be able to look straight out of the window, hopefully at a nice view than the building rubble.

What?! You mean you're not keeping the cement mixer? Grin

ShakespearesSisters · 14/06/2019 07:32

Haha @WhereDoesThisToiletGo, although it's been there so long maybe I should have planted it up and made it into a feature.

BiscuitDrama · 14/06/2019 07:35

In our last house we had a door where your window was and we thought about moving it to where your door currently is so we could add a bit of worktop. Breakfast bar was in the same place. IRL the door and breakfast bar seemed like it would be fine.

Wingedharpy · 14/06/2019 13:13

It might work better if you rehang the door so that the hinges are on the right rather than the left.
That way, you could open the door just enough to get out with the rubbish bags but without having to disturb the occupant of the stool nearest to the door.
If you want to get out with a double wardrobe however ........

justchecking1 · 14/06/2019 14:12

I've got a similar set up but it's the door to the garage. It's not used often. If I need to go in there I just wait til people are out of the way. The stools tuck under the breakfast bar so don't get in the way when not being used. It works fine

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 14/06/2019 14:45

@Wingedharpy Good suggestion re swapping the door hinge. Makes an amazing difference.
and if they want to get a double wardrobe out the door, they need the people sitting at the breakfast bar to get up and help!
