Tell me about an insulated garden utility room please!

Hi ladies,

We are accepting the fact the the new house extension project would not provide sufficient space for all the appliances.

So we are thinking to get a readily made insulated garden room for keeping the washing machine, dryer and tools in. If lucky (affordable) we may be able to store some off season clothes/luggage there too.

I've seen other posts this kind of outhouse utility room been mentioned. Can someone tell me if it requires building regulation control as electricity needs to be run?

How much we shall be looking at to pay for this kind of garden house setup?

Thank you!

You also need water supply and drainage

WhereDoesThisToiletGo, you are right! Does it being the work under regulation control certainly?

I used to have a washing machine and tumble drier in the garage. The back door to the garage was 2 steps away from my kitchen back door. I hated going out there.

Councils are wary of garden rooms that have the potential to be a self contained annexe by stealth. So electricity to a home office or playroom is ok, but add in plumbing to a "Utilty" and next thing the owners have quietly installed a shower room and loo and are renting it out as a studio flat...

Our utility room is in our house, but in the UK we have a treehouse and a large office space at the bottom of the garden. We don't spend much of the year there, so they have to stand up to the elements without heating. We kept the windows small, with thick glass, and sought out insulation that would prevent both heat loss and issues with moisture. I think in the end, the contractor used polyurethane foam on the walls and ceiling of both structures, and the floor of the treehouse (no underfloor heating in there).

We got planning permission, as the office space is more than 10m2 and too far away from our house, but for a utility room that's closer you shouldn't worry.

I would sacrifice a couple of kitchen cupboards to keep my washer and dryer indoors. I'd rather store the slow cooker (that gets used twice a year) in a shed

Mine is also two steps from the kitchen door and I loathe it. It's a miserable experience in the winter and I'm busy thinking of every possible way of bringing it indoors.

It also has loads of insulation but the pipes of the washing machine were still damaged in the winter and now it leaks. Which means running a space heater I think, so you might need to take that into account.
