How to cheer up an unattractive terraced house?

We've had an offer accepted and I'm tentatively getting excited.

The house will be our first home, it's an okay size, we are happy with the location.

There's nothing wrong with it, per se, I just don't think it's pretty and I'm trying to think of things to do to it.

We may change the windows as some have missing handles.

I wanted to put a bay window in but it will look out of place in the street and DP isn't happy admit losing parking space.

Any suggestions? I've tried looking online but everything appears centred around improving the appearance of Victorian terraced houses for some reason!

@PaintingOwls I'm sure it will look just like it when you're spruced up!

Do come back and show us the 'after'!

*Hanging baskets are common confused

In which universe?*

The universe of being class conscious and having something to prove ;)

I’m really sorry for offending the hanging baskets crew. Taste is subjective.

My mother would have had a case of the vapours if I had ever had a hanging basket.

Window boxes with some grasses in them would look so good. Bit more architectural as someone upthread has said.

I love hanging baskets! There are loads of really pretty terraced houses where I live and they look so cosy. A nice door, nice pots and a cosy warm light would look brilliant.

jojo right you are then Wink

Also can you plant up the driveway where the concrete is missing? Get some lavender in there.

NavyBerry · 11/06/2019 18:50

We are in the process of buying a similar looking house. It is so interesting to read all the advice! Loads of great ideas! First thing I thought was flowers but how will you open the car doors? Imagine getting out with all the shopping or putting a baby in? Do you have children? Will it be convenient for you with a pushchair? Congratulations by the way! I hope you will close the deal soon!

Atalune I'm foreign and find the British class thing pure comedy Grin Nothing personal.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 19:50

Yes, congratulations. It’s a lovely house.

I would have window boxes. But absolutely not grasses. They die back in the winter. I think I would have small evergreen shrubs, such as mini hebes or euonymus, then in the spaces in between you can have ivy and one or seasonal plants. Vary shape rather than colour.

Trachelospermum jasminoides (star jasmine) would make a great climber. Aldi had some large and gorgeous ones last week, surprisingly.

We removed our nets and replaced with nice wide wooden blinds. Even when they are open the horizontal stripes stop people from staring in and they look smart from the outside. I think we got them from here www.directblinds.co.uk/wooden-blinds/filter/medium/taped-blinds/ .

As a temporary measure you can buy packs of replacement window handles from diy stores for a few £s which may be worth doing until you are ready to replace the old windows.

PaintingOwls · 15/06/2019 18:46

Yeah I think windows will be important. I was looking at second hand ones on Gumtree and there are some decent ones out there, so perhaps not all hope is lost!

The survey will be carried out next week, so hopefully there aren't any nasty surprises!

I was showing my mum my Pinterest boards today and she hates everything... says I should do the house up Scandi style! Grin
